Trip Itinerary
1
Lagos
Day 1-2
After a hearty and healthy breakfast we cast off and set sail! Since we are always dependent on the wind and weather and to find the best surf spots, the sailing route can change a little and must be adapted to the weather conditions. Our first landfall is in Lagos. Lagos is known for its walled old town, cliffs and Atlantic beaches. Steep wooden steps lead to the sandy cove of Praia do Camilo. The nearby cliffs of Ponta de Piedade offer a magnificent view of the headland and a lighthouse.
2
Portimão
Day 2-3
Portimão is the largest city in the Western Algarve and was traditionally a center for shipbuilding, sardine fishing and fish processing. Today, most of this industry has been replaced by tourism, leisure and retail, making Portimão a large city with many residential areas. There is quite a lot to see in the city. The city's old and once busy fishing docks have been responsibly transformed into a picturesque promenade.
3
Alvor
Day 3-4
Alvor is one of the most beautiful resorts in the Algarve and the ideal destination if you want to spend a relaxing day on the beach. Historically, Alvor was a fortified town and fishing port. The town sits on the banks of the Alvor Estuary overlooking the protected marshlands of the Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve, while to the south is Praia do Alvor, one of the largest sandy beaches in the Algarve. Alvor is a delightful town with a typical Portuguese appearance. There are traditional whitewashed houses, narrow cobblestone streets and small fishing boats stopped on the banks of the river.
4
Zavial
Day 4-5
The next day we drop anchor in Zavial. Here the long and tubular waves are ideal for surfing and bodyboarding, but Zavial Beach has other attractions to offer. Surrounded by high and often steep cliffs that protect from all strong winds, this beach is very popular. Let's snorkel or go into the water with our boards! Zavial is located east of the town of Sagres and is one of the most famous waves in southern Portugal. It can be fast and hollow and gets offshore winds most of the time, so smaller waves can set up. The beach is not as exposed to westerly winds, but there are good waves that wrap around it and hit it. It is a clean hollow wave and with small swells it is ideal for beginners and advanced surfers. Also, Zavial is a great beach to relax and take a relaxing swim when the waves are not breaking.
5
Sagres
Day 5-6
Tonal Beach is within walking distance from the center of Sagres and is a great beach for surfing for beginners to advanced surfers. The waves are consistent but varied. There are waves all year round and in the winter months it can swell a lot, which can be spectacular. Tonal Beach is easy to reach from Sagres and when conditions are good it is one of the most beautiful surfing beaches in the Algarve. The small, elongated village of Sagres overlooks some of the most dramatic scenery in the Algarve and seems like the end of the world. High above the foaming ocean are cliffs with windswept forts that link it to Portugal's intense nautical past. It is the only place in the world where white storks nest on cliffs.
6
Praia do Beliche
Day 6-7
Beliche is a small sheltered beach north of Sagres and offers a great wave with the right swell. The large cliffs make Beliche a spectacular beach to surf and the best months to surf here are before and after the main summer months. A boon of wave and beach for surfing for intermediate and advanced surfers. Praia do Beliche is located south of the towering and strangely flat cliffs of Cabo Sao Vicente. Not only does this provide a spectacular backdrop, but it also offers a bit of protection from the strong Atlantic waves that hit the coast further north. This is not to say that there are no waves here - quite the opposite. It is one of the best surfing beaches in Sagres, with the waves often a little more manageable than the other beaches around the headland.
7
Portimão
Day 7-8
We sail south again. Unfortunately, our adventurous and entertaining week is coming to an end and we have to slowly return to Portimão. Will we make it? Or will we just sail on to America instead? Who is with us? Let's see...
