Iceland Round Trip

We start in the Icelandic capital Reykjavík. This small city is absolutely adorable, as are its inhabitants. After that, we'll go from one natural highlight to the next. The list includes the lava formations of Dimmuborgir, the breathtaking fjords and glaciers near Höfn, whale watching in Akureyri and the thermal springs and waterfalls at the Golden Circle. My goal is to rent a car and then drive from accommodation to accommodation - in total we will cover about 1500 km. Ideally we are 4 people to keep the costs as low as possible. Get in touch if you want to experience the adventure of Iceland!

Since Iceland is relatively expensive I would like to use cheap accommodation. However, the standard in the country itself is relatively high and we will sleep in 2-person rooms.

Trip Itinerary

Reykjavík

Day 1-3
Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland and the northernmost capital in the world. With its 123,246 inhabitants, it is also the largest city in Iceland; about 37.3% of the total population lives here. One of the most important sights is the Perlan (pearl in Icelandic). It is a viewing platform with a restaurant. In addition, there are museums (for the inquisitive), but to understand the spirit of Reykjavík, you have to go to the cozy little cafes and experience the super friendly and open people. On the second day, you can take a trip to the Blue Lagoon. It is a popular spa with an open air lagoon with mineral rich water in a lava field.
2

Kalmanstunga

Day 3-4
We depart from the ring route and visit 3 highlights on our little detour: - The steaming springs of Deildartunguhver. - The Gysir in Reykholt - Barnafoss waterfall
3

Akureyri

Day 4-5
The small "town" of Akureyri with its 18,000 is the starting point for whale watching. In addition, there are some nice buildings, which, however, are rather negligible next to the whales. On the way to the next stop we visit the Goðafoss waterfall and hike a bit in the surrounding area.
4

Reykjahlíð

Day 5-6
Mývatn (Mosquito Lake) is located in the northeast of Iceland. Its name comes from the huge swarms of mosquitoes that form around the lake in summer - thank goodness we won't encounter any mosquitoes! We will see the natural spectacles on site and other highlights such as Dettifoss and the lava formations of Dymmuborgir.
5

Egilsstaðir

Day 6-7
We use Egilsstaðir as a starting point for various highlights such as Borgarfjörður or Litlanesfoss (strange stone formation with waterfalls).
6

Höfn

Day 7-8
On the way to Höfn we will drive past the beautiful and majestic eastern fjords. On the way we will also have a look at Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Iceland. Höfn itself is again a nice place. It is known for its lobsters. So if you like, you can definitely get your money's worth here.
7

Skaftafell

Day 8-9
On our way to Skaftafell we can observe seals sunbathing at the glacier lake Jökulsárlón with a little luck. Otherwise we still have the spectacular view! Arrived at Skaftafell itself we have to hike a bit. Here again the strange rock formations can be observed.
8

Vik

Day 9-10
Our last stop before returning to Reykjavík is Vík í Mýrdal. In the extended surroundings we look at Reynisfjara (lava beach), Skógafoss (large waterfall) and Seljalandsfoss (also a waterfall).
9

Reykjavík

Day 10-11
It's time to say goodbye. I am sure after the many impressions and experiences it will be hard for us to go separate ways again, but who knows you always see each other twice in life :)
