Trip Itinerary
1
Omdurman
Day 1-3
Here we will meet or pick you up from the airport. In Omdurman is the Sudanese family where we stay. Only 5 minutes to the huge bazaar, 10 minutes to the dancing dervishes and other historical points. This is more or less our expedition headquarters. :) From here we have to register and apply for travel permits for the trip. I will do all this for you, together with our Sudanese friend, with whom we are staying.
2
Old Dongola
Day 3-4
We drive in our rented 4x4 vehicles through the desert to Ad Dabbah, where we refuel and then drive across the Nile, then several kilometers into the desert to camp among the dunes. The next day we will drive to Old Dongola to visit the remains of Makuria, an ancient Christian kingdom from the Middle Ages.
3
Dongola
Day 4-5
We continue offroad to Dongola, where we go to the market, and then we go about 50 km into the desert west of Dongola to visit the oasis "Al Kab", where we spend the night between palm trees...the next morning we can walk around in the oasis, before we drive back again and make our way to Karima...
4
Karima
Day 5-6
Karima is our first encounter with the Kushites and remains of the black pharaohs. Here at the foot of the "Jebel Barkal" (holy mountain) is an ancient temple of Amun and behind it our first pyramids. A few kilometers further are underground tombs richly painted with hieroglyphics and Egyptian deities. In Karima we stock up on provisions at the market, because we want to go further into the desert to an old monastery and further to a very special place...
5
Ad-Dāmar
Day 6-8
The route Karima - Ad Damar (Atbara) takes 2 days, because we do not drive on asphalt, but offroad through the desert. First we will spend 1 night at Ghazali, an old, dilapidated monastery in the desert and look at it the next day, then it goes adventurously through old river beds (wadis) further to a volcanic crater (Jebel Atrun), the landscape will be really impressive and fascinating. In the volcanic crater we meet native "Howadenda", a nomadic tribe that mines soda in the soda lake of the crater and transports it away with camels...
6
Haiya
Day 8-9
Via Atbara, where we have breakfast and taste raw camel liver, we drive towards Port Sudan, but only until Hayya Junction, where we make a stopover. We slowly enter the area of the East Sudanese tribes of the Beja, known for fuzzy hair and swords.
7
Port Sudan
Day 9-11
In the morning we leave from Hayya, through the Red Sea Hills to the coast. First stop will be Suakin, the former main port of Sudan, now in ruins. Here it is interesting to see that the city was once built of coral. A morbid charm. Port Sudan itself has its own flair, especially when we sit in the evening in one of the many street cafes at the harbor, drinking coffee, smoking shisha and playing billiards. Here we still have to apply for a special permit to drive to the north. We should also refill diesel and water, as well as food, because behind Port Sudan there is nothing more.
8
Dungunab
Day 11-13
Whoo-hoo! Off to the beach. About 200km north of Port Sudan is a great beach, white sand and miles of coral reefs, which we can easily snorkel. So be sure to pack your snorkeling gear! And fishing rods! There we relax and wash off the dust of the desert, because after Dungunab we go on a strenuous epedition into the desert.
9
Nurayet
Day 13-15
Now it gets exciting! From Dongonab we leave the asphalt road and cross the Red Sea Hills offroad, always following an old wadi. We will stop often, because the landscape is just breathtaking! Desert and mountains! In a Goldgraeberslum at the "end of the world" we refuel what we can, because the vehicles consume offroad very much. And at some point a monolith will appear in front of us, at whose feet we will set up our camp. From there we will explore the rock engravings, which are one of the largest African rock art galleries. We continue the next day, but have to camp again on the way back to civilization, because we often encounter deep sand and progress is slow.
10
Atbara
Day 15-16
Finally back in civilization. Breakfast, shopping, refueling, maybe a shower, before we drive in the direction of Meroe pyramids, one of the largest pyramid fields of Sudan. Here 40-50 pyramids rise out of the desert sand, there are no or hardly any tourists and one can wander around undisturbed between the pyramids. The best thing is, we can set up our camp right next to the pyramids and maybe even take some night photographs...
11
Shendi
Day 16-17
In the morning the pyramids, then on to the 2 last monuments - Mussawarat with the Lion Temple and Nagga with its Amun Temple. Both are somewhere in the desert, about 30 km away from the main road. Before that we stop in Shendi and go to the market, there we can see how the traditional "Markub" (shoes) are hand sewn and other interesting things. Today we will spend the last night under the open sky before we return to Khartoum...
12
Omdurman
Day 17-19
Back in civilization, back with our Sudanese family. To end our adventure we can visit the confluence of the white and blue Nile on Tuti Island, have coffee in the evening on the banks of the Nile, visit the National Museum, and if it is Friday, we can watch the Nuba wrestling matches. And then, unfortunately, it's time to fly home again...
