Details about this trip
This will be a 2 week guided trip in Bhutan, round trip from Paro. I have organized the itinerary in coordination with a local operator to be unique and include the most fascinating parts of Bhutan that many people do not have the chance to see! Pricing includes accommodation, entrance fees, private guide, private driver and vehicle as well as food. This is set by the tour provider. Including visiting many ancient dzong fortresses that dot the country, visiting picturesque ancestral Bhutanese monasteries and visits to the Layaps and Brokpas who have unique customs in some very far-flung parts of the country. The government even set up the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary (which we will visit) to protect the mythical yeti! To top it all off we will take to the iconic Tiger’s Leap Monastery. This is an adventure-style trip with environmental challenges but limited trekking: *) Altitude up to ~3,000+ meters *) Short treks to Laya and Tiger’s Leap Monasteries *) Travel through remote areas with rough roads 👉 This trip is best suited for: *) Fit and active travelers *) Those comfortable with short hikes and long distance road travel *) Travelers open to simple, authentic experiences Preparation is important, and I strongly recommend researching altitude conditions and how to adapt safely.

Hi, I'm Tristan, I usually do solo backpacking trips and have been balancing traveling with a full time job. When it makes sense with the destination I open up trips to other people too. I have organized group trips like this through Mongolia and Namibia in the past, I have a Tibet trip planned which you can also sign up for and I am excited to do another group trip, this time to Bhutan! I have experience crating such bespoke itineraries in the past such as a 4-day horseback trek in the remote Mongolian wilderness as well as a road trip through the Gobi and the Naadam Festival. Additionally I have organized and led a road trip through Namibia so remote and off-the-beaten path experiences are something I am very comfortable with.

Accommodation will be arranged in advance and includes a mix of: *) Comfortable hotels in major stops *) Guesthouses and monastery stays in remote areas 👉 Rooms are shared by default 👉 Private rooms may be arranged upon request (additional cost) Please note that in remote regions, accommodation can be more basic, which is part of the overall experience. This is not a standard trip, it’s a shared expedition designed for curious and adventurous travelers who want to experience Tibet in a deeper and more authentic way. If this sounds like your kind of journey, feel free to reach out, I’d be happy to share more details and see if it’s a good fit 😊

Thimphu

Day 1-3
Thimphu is the largest city in the country and the capital. For that reason it has the only stoplight in the whole country! We will be able to visit the town’s dzongs, Buddha Dordenma statue nearby and the Takin Preserve which has the country’s national animal, the takin.

Punakha

Day 3-4
From Thimphu drive to Punakha where the Punakha Dzong awaits as well as the Chimi Lhakhang monastery which is the famous fertility temple that the divine madman set up. Some unique photo opportunities and souvenir opportunities here as the phallus is the symbol of fertility in the area.

Day 4-5
A half drive and half trek to get to this remote mountain town in the north. This is the town the Layap ethnic group lives in. They are famous for selling cordyceps and their iconic bamboo cone hats.

Punakha

Day 5-6
Returning to Punakha and perhaps time to visit anything we didn’t previously have time for. For most of this day we will stay in Laya and return here as the journey does take some time and effort. Possible Punakha Dzong and Chimi Lhakhang monastery visit.

Merak

Day 8-9
This small town is famous for two things, being in Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary and being home to the semi nomadic Brokpa. Sakteng is famously the national park of the yeti and while that may be a bit fanciful, it does protect some beautiful scenery and the red panda.

Trashigang

Day 9-10
Morning in Merak where we visit with the semi nomadic Brokpa. The Brokpa wear an iconic woolen hat in the shape of a spider to keep rainwater away from their faces. Drive back to Trashigang on the long road back to the west.

Bumthang Valley

Day 10-12
Two nights in this valley where we will stay around Jakar. It is well known for several monuments including but not limited to Jakar Dzong, Tamzhing Monastery, and Wangduechhoeling Palace. Nice to stay somewhere for 2 night in a row after such a fast-paced trip!

Paro

Day 12-14
If lucky we will flit back to Paro but if weather does not cooperate, we have a long drive back. In Paro we will cap off this trip with Paro Taktsang and Paro Dzong. Paro Taktsang is the postcard image for the whole country. Until next time!
