Details about this trip
Pack your backpack and join me on Part 1 of my Thailand road trip. In this part, we’ll explore four of Thailand’s most beautiful islands, get to know the megacity of Bangkok, and experience the legendary Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan. Route through Thailand: Bangkok 🏙️ -> Koh Tao 🏝️ -> Koh Phangan 🏝️ -> Krabi 🏞️ -> Koh Phi Phi 🏝️ -> Phuket 🏄🏼 Our travel group: 1) Timo 🙋🇩🇪 - Trip Leader 2) Ursula 🙋🏼‍♀️🇩🇪 - Trip Mate _____________________________________________ ℹ️ OVERVIEW: Days 1-3: Arrival in Bangkok 🏙️ We’ll all meet up in Bangkok by dinner at the latest, get to know each other in person, and discuss the upcoming days. I’d be happy to give you helpful tips in advance on the easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport to your accommodation in Bangkok. If you arrive in Bangkok a few days early, please let me know and I’ll be happy to provide you with tips on how to make the most of your time until the trip begins. If this is your first time in Bangkok, I’ll show you some of the typical (but must-see) highlights of the Thai capital. But we’d also love to visit the less touristy corners of my new hometown. Decide what you’d like to focus on: - Street food 🍜 - Shopping 🛍️ - Culture 🏯 - History 🏛️ - Nightlife 🍻 Days 3–6: Koh Tao – The Diving Paradise 🏝️ Koh Tao is a relatively small island and offers a relaxed start to our Thailand tour. Koh Tao is especially famous for its underwater world. There’s a huge selection of diving schools, and prices are low due to the high level of competition. If you’re planning to take a diving course, this is exactly the right place (cost: €250–300, ❌ not included). While you can decide on the spot once you’re on the island, please let’s discuss it beforehand anyway, as we may need to adjust the itinerary. Days 6–10: Koh Phangan – Full Moon Party 🌝🏝️ Many years ago, Koh Phangan was an insider’s secret, when backpackers and hippies from all over the world would gather on Haad Rin Beach once a month for a massive party. Nowadays, the Full Moon Party attracts thousands of guests every month, who drink cocktails from beach buckets while wearing colorful neon shirts and dance in the sand to electronic music. But the island has much more to offer than just this one party night (which we certainly won’t miss, of course)—let yourself be surprised! Days 10–12: Krabi – The Outdoor Paradise 🏞️ Krabi is the gateway to the islands along Thailand’s west coast, so the laid-back town of Krabi will be our next stop before we head out to the islands along Thailand’s west coast. We’ll spend the afternoon here exploring this small provincial town and sampling all kinds of street food at the cozy night market. Krabi is best known for its mangroves, the Tiger Cave Temple, and the dreamy beaches in Railay. Days 12–14: Koh Phi Phi – The Picture-Perfect Island 🌴 Hardly any other island in Thailand is more synonymous with a dream island than Koh Phi Phi. Ever since Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Beach,” the region around the tranquil island of Koh Phi Phi has become a magnet for visitors from all over the world. There’s always something going on in Koh Phi Phi, from late morning until early morning. 🍻 Days 14–15: Phuket – Thailand’s Largest Island 🏄 Our next and final stop in the south is Thailand’s largest (and most touristy) island, Phuket. We’ll spend our last night here in Phuket Town, which offers a beautiful historic old town and interesting options for shopping enthusiasts and Harry Potter fans. From Phuket, my journey continues northward through Thailand (JMT Trip: Discover Thailand Part 2). If you only want to see the south, this will be our final stop. If you’d like to add a few days in the north but don’t have enough time for the entire second part of our Thailand trip, just let me know and we’ll find a solution! 😊 Otherwise, Phuket offers both numerous affordable flight and bus connections to Bangkok, as well as numerous direct international flights to Europe, India, and the UAE (❌ Flight not included in the trip price). _____________________________________________ What can you expect on this trip? ➕ 100% backpacking vibe 🎒 ➕ Explore Thailand’s hottest islands 🌏 ➕ Get your scuba certification on a whim and dive with the turtles off Koh Tao 🐢🐟 ➕ Dance in the sand at Haad Rin for the legendary Full Moon Party 🌴🪩 ➕ A cool international travel group that’s up for islands, parties, and travel 🤗 ➕ Enough time to explore the islands on your own in between or chill in a hammock 🌿🏝️4️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ What’s included in the tour price? ✅ All transfers (night bus, train, taxi, speedboat, ferry, bus, minivan) ✅ All accommodations (in shared twin-bed rooms/bungalows) ✅ eSIM card with 15GB 4G/5G internet ✅ Sightseeing walking tour (incl. entrance fees for Wat Suthat) – Bangkok ✅ Full-day snorkeling boat trip incl. lunch - Koh Tao ✅ Scooter rental for 3 days - Koh Phangan ✅ Full Moon Party briefing (do's & don'ts) - Koh Phangan ✅ Tiger Cave Temple - Krabi ✅ Preliminary information, packing list, and travel tips. ✅ 24/7 Customer Service and Support by JMT. What is not included in the tour price? ❌ (International) Flights to/from Bangkok and Phuket ❌ Daily Meals, Snacks & Drinks (approx. €5–€15 per day) ❌ Scooter fuel (approx. €2 per day) ❌ Full Moon Party entrance fee (€6) & transportation (€10) ❌ Optional: single room upgrade (approx. €15–30 per day) ❌ Everything else marked with ❌ or not listed _____________________________________________ ℹ️ TRAVEL SEASON: Off-season 🌤️ It’s no longer as hot as in the spring, and the first major rainy season is over. Overall, the climate is quite pleasant. When it rains, it’s often in the late afternoon or evening for 1–2 hours, though this tends to affect northern and central Thailand more than the islands. During this season, the rice fields glow in the most beautiful shades of green ☘️ and the air is clean and clear. 🌺 During the day, temperatures hover around 30 degrees almost everywhere. At night, it’s pleasantly cool at 20–25 degrees, so you can get by without air conditioning. _____________________________________________

ABOUT YOUR TRIP LEADER: I’ve been exploring the world for 10 years now and have fallen in love with Thailand. So in 2024, I moved to Bangkok with my girlfriend Hannah from Germany. From here, I regularly travel to new and familiar regions in Southeast Asia. Since Hannah can only travel with me during her vacations, I’m looking forward to meeting cool tripmates from all over the world so I don’t have to discover Southeast Asia’s most amazing places all by myself. _____________________________________________ ❓HOW DO I TRAVEL? I’m a frugalist and a fan of the simple life with as much independence as possible. To that end, I’m a vegetarian and prefer an affordable and as sustainable as possible backpacking travel style. That means: - (Carry-on) backpack 🎒 instead of a suitcase 🧳🚫 - Simple, clean rooms in local guesthouses 🏡 or sociable hostels 🏠 instead of international hotel chains. - Good, affordable local food at roadside stalls 🍲 - Beer 🍺 and cocktails 🍹 during happy hour instead of fancy drinks at a rooftop bar 🍸 - Traveling like the locals—slower but 100% authentic 🚂 - Sightseeing on your own 🛵 instead of with tightly organized tourist groups and guides 🚐 _____________________________________________ MY EXPECTATIONS: My ideal travel buddies share a passion for simple and authentic backpacking. Even though more and more flashpackers, digital nomads, and package tourists are flocking to the islands in the Gulf of Thailand, for me these three islands are the birthplace of Thailand’s backpacking scene, and there are still secluded and beautiful beaches to be found. 🤗 ❗IMPORTANT❗We’re going on a BACKPACKING trip. 😉 On this trip, we’ll be using a wide variety of transportation, and suitcases can sometimes be really impractical. I therefore prefer tripmates who swap their suitcases for backpacks. 🧳🚫 _____________________________________________

ℹ️ ACCOMMODATION: During our trip, we’ll be staying in simple but clean and well-maintained hostels 🏠 or family-run homestays and bungalow resorts 🏡 that are centrally located and conveniently situated. The accommodations are kept simple and basic and meet the average Southeast Asian standard. So please don’t expect 4-star all-inclusive hotel resorts by Western standards. ;) As a rule, two people always share a twin room (separate beds, of course), usually with a private bathroom, though sometimes with a shared bathroom (depending on the group size). There is almost always the option (at the Full Moon Party, subject to availability) to upgrade to a private room. The cost must then be paid on-site (€15–30 extra per night, not included ❌). _____________________________________________ If you have any questions, suggestions, or ideas, feel free to send me a message and let’s chat beforehand. :-)

Bangkok

Day 1-3
Our trip begins in classic style in Bangkok, near the legendary Khao San Road—the perfect starting point for backpackers in Bangkok. We’ll meet here in the evening for our first dinner together. Afterward, you can experience the legendary nightlife firsthand and get in the mood for the days ahead. The culture shock is least intense in this area, and you’ll quickly get used to Thai street life. The next day, we’ll explore the magnificent temples of Wat Suthat and, if time permits, Wat Saket (✅ admission included). These historic sites are not only a must-see for every visitor but also offer breathtaking photo opportunities. Please don’t forget to wear appropriate clothing (shoulders and knees must be covered). Afterward, we’ll take a short boat tour on Thailand’s largest river and immerse ourselves in the bustling, chaotic atmosphere of Chinatown. We’ll stroll through the streets, sample all kinds of crazy street food creations, and marvel at the countless small shops. In the evening, we’ll make a quick stop at one of the many night markets, where there’s a huge selection of street food. After dinner, we’ll head south by night bus or night train (depending on when you book) and take a ferry to our first dream island. We’ll arrive on Koh Tao early in the morning and have the day to ourselves. ℹ️ If you’ve been to Bangkok and Khao San Road before, we can also set up camp in the heart of Bangkok around Sukhumvit Road and immerse ourselves in the daily life of modern Bangkok.

Ko Tao

Day 3-6
To recover from the long journey, we’ll start by relaxing on the beach. If you’re interested in a diving course (or a trial dive), we’ll be happy to help you find the right diving school. It’s important to consider factors such as the language of instruction, PADI/SSI certification, the instructors, group size, the pool, and the condition of the equipment. As an experienced diver, I’m happy to help you choose the right dive school. In the evening, we’ll get in the mood for the coming days at one of the beach bars or during the traditional Koh Tao pub crawl (❌ drinks not included). The next day, for those who don’t want to dive, a snorkeling trip to various bays around the island awaits (✅ included in the tour price). If you’re looking for even more action, there are plenty of other activities that can be booked spontaneously on-site (❌ not included in the tour price). Some of the most popular activities include: - Exploring the island by scooter - (Introductory) diving - Muay Thai boxing - Thai cooking class etc.

Ko Pha Ngan

Day 6-10
After a few relaxing days on Koh Tao, we’ll head to the larger neighboring island of Koh Phangan. This is where Southeast Asia’s biggest monthly beach party takes place, though we’ll miss it this time around. But there are plenty of other Half Moon, Black Moon, jungle, and beach parties here, so no worries. ;) We’ll rent a scooter here (✅ included) to explore the various beaches, waterfalls, viewpoints, coconut plantations, and hidden spots. We absolutely need to use scooters; if you can’t or don’t want to drive or ride along, any costs for transportation or tours may need to be paid separately (❌ not included in the trip price). I’d like to go kitesurfing for 1–2 days (half-day). If you’re also interested in kitesurfing, you can take a course or rent equipment on-site.

Krabi

Day 10-12
After just under a week on the islands, we’ll leave the Gulf of Thailand and continue on to the west coast by ferry and bus. The trip takes at least half a day. Once we arrive in Krabi, we’ll spend the late afternoon and evening exploring this laid-back town and enjoying a meal together at the local street food night market. The next morning, we’ll have time to visit the famous Tiger Cave Temple (✅ included in the tour price). In the afternoon, weather permitting, there’s also the option to take a boat to Railay to enjoy the sunset on one of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches (❌ boat trip not included in the tour price).

Phi Phi Islands

Day 12-14
From Krabi, we’ll head on to Koh Phi Phi. It’s a small island nestled between two mountains, with two beautiful beaches. Since we’re traveling during the off-season, it’s fortunately not quite as crowded. If Koh Phi Phi isn’t quite enough for you, I recommend a half-day trip to nearby Maya Bay (❌ not included in the tour price). This island is uninhabited, and only boats carrying day-trippers visit this dreamlike bay. In addition to some scenes on Khao San Road, "The Beach" was filmed here in 2000, in which Leonardo DiCaprio lived on this idyllic beach with a handful of hippies before they all started getting cabin fever. The film was a key pioneer of today’s backpacking scene and put Thailand on the map as a dream destination worldwide. Unfortunately, it’s not as idyllic as it was back then, but it’s still worth a visit. Otherwise, Koh Phi Phi has an outstanding nightlife, with numerous bars, fire shows, beer pong tournaments, and a vibe all its own.

Phuket

Day 14-15
After visiting the smallest island on our Thailand tour, we’re now heading to the final stop on our journey: Thailand’s largest island, Phuket. Phuket is THE ultimate destination for package tour travelers and all-inclusive tourists from all over the world. But that doesn’t detract from the beauty of its expansive beaches (especially in the off-season). As an alternative to the beach, Phuket Town offers a nice contrast, so we’ll be staying here for our final night. Surrounded by restored colonial architecture, many charming boutiques, trendy cafes, and—for Harry Potter fans—the chance to enjoy a Butterbeer at the Hog’s Head Pub, Phuket Town offers a completely different perspective on Thailand. For me and everyone who joined my “Discover Thailand XXL” trip, the journey continues north to Chiang Mai. For you, the trip would end here, and you can either add a few more days of beach vacation, fly back to Bangkok on a budget, or head straight home from Phuket. It’s best to look for an open-jaw flight when booking your tickets—outbound to Bangkok, return from Phuket. :)
