The Best Travel Itinerary for Tenerife

This 7-day itinerary is perfect if you're visiting this beautiful island for the first time. Take your time to enjoy the vistas and plan on doing a hike somewhere.

Day 1 - The Northeast 


Our first stop is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, almost half of the one million people living in Tenerife live in Santa Cruz, it’s the urban heart of the island. Wander around the city and explore for a while, before heading to Las Teresitas. Relax on this amazing beach, have a cocktail, and enjoy the sun. End your day in San Cristobal de la Laguna. This little town will make you feel like you’re in Cuba and not Spain anymore.

Day 2 - Discover the rainforest Anaga 


Start your day in the Parque Natural de Anaga by visiting the visitor center in Barrio Cruz Carmen and finding the perfect hike for you. After you finish your hike, go to Taganana and Benijo. Grab some food here and relax for a minute, afterwards you can drive around, discover the many small villages in the area and enjoy the visas at Las Carboneras. 

Day 3 - Holiday feeling in Puerto de la Cruz 


Puerto de la Cruz is a small city directly on the beach, where you can just wander around and enjoy some sangria. Visit the La Orotava Botanical Gardens or have some wine at casa del vino de Tenerife. Take this day to travel slowly and enjoy yourself.

Day 4 - History and ancient nature 


Visit the historic city center of La Orotava and discover the Casa de los Balcones. You can do a tour here and learn about the history of this place. It’s also a nice spot to take some photos. Afterward, visit the Parque del Drago. You will find one of the Instagram spots here - Drago Siete Fuentes - a tree that’s about 500-600 years old. 

Day 5 - Drive through the coast and mountains 


On day 5 you will visit the most western point of Tenerife. Go to Punta de Teno to see a first glimpse of Los Gigantes, a massive rock formation. Go to Masca, one of Tenerife’s must-see villages. The drive there can be a little nerve-wracking but the views of Masca valley will make it worth your while. There are also some really nice hikes around the valley and the village. 

Day 6 - Enjoy the beach in Los Cristianos 


Los Cristianos is one of Tenerife’s party cities. There are quite a few bars and restaurants around town. Enjoy the beach, have a mojito, and eat some tapas. If you want to see more of Los Gigantes you can also head out to Puerto de Santiago, enjoy the view and go for a boat trip to see some whales and dolphins. 

Day 7 - El Teide Nationalpark 


El Teide is Spain’s highest mountain and at one point or another, you will have seen it while traveling the island. On this last day, you will finally see it up close. Take the cable car up the mountain and enjoy the view. We recommend booking your ticket in advance if you want to take the cable car. For the rest of the day decide on a hike or just enjoy the nature surrounding you.

Best Time to Visit Tenerife

Tenerife has very hot summers and very mild winters with sunshine almost all year round. European spring and fall are considered the best time to visit Tenerife. In February you can visit the famous Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival - the second largest carnival after Rios. You’ll also be able to spot some whales close to the coast and be able to pick oranges in spring.

Playa La Tejita


This beach is in the south of the island and offers beautiful views of Montaña. There are no restaurants or bars around, so make sure to bring your food and drinks!

Getting around Tenerife

Car Hire

The best way to see this beautiful Spanish island is by car. You will get a rental car for around 15-20€ a day. You can also hire cars from the hotel or resort you are staying at.


Finding a taxi is really easy in Tenerife. They are priced fairly and will get you wherever you want to go. You will pay around 4€ for a longer ride. Airport Transfer can be a little more expensive, depending on where you're staying.

Public Transport

The second best way to see the island is by bus. The local bus company is called Titsa. You buy the tickets from the driver. There are Day TravelCards from 10€ and a 7 Day TravelCard from 50€. You can also go on tours to the major sights by bus.

What does it cost to travel to Tenerife?

On average you will spend 48€ a day on transport. This includes a rental car, public transport, taxi, and airport transfer.

Must-Try Foods in Tenerife

Goat Cheese


This is something you will find in almost every restaurant, especially when eating tapas. It's often served fresco (fresh) and with Gofia, a local bread made from roasted grain flour.

Conejo al salmorejo


This rabbit stew is made with paprika, vinegar chili, and special herbs from the island. A specialty you should definitely not miss.

Queso a La Plancha con Miel

This is grilled cheese (not the sandwich) with honey. Often served in tapas restaurants with bread and salad.

Fresh Fish


This is a given. Tenerife is an island and has some wonderful varieties of local fish that you shouldn't miss.
