Trip Itinerary
1
Omitara
Day 1-2
In Windhoek we only plan to land and pick up a rental car. Depending on the size of the group we will distribute the cars accordingly (e.g. 4 tripmates = 2 overlanders, 6 tripmates = 3 overlanders, etc.). In the surroundings of Omitara we will spend the first night, after we have equipped ourselves in Windhoek with all necessary food. Whether Campsite or autarkic we can decide in advance gladly together. Tomorrow we will cross the border to Botswana.
2
Dekar
Day 2-3
It expects us the first border crossing and a rather long day trip, almost 500 kilometers we put back today, with border crossing it will be a long day that we will then end nicely in Dekar at dinner.
3
Motopi
Day 3-6
From here we can plan the next days, whether it will be two or three remains to be seen. There are some National Parks within reach, which are partly closed due to the season in January and February. Which should not be a problem, because there are still some National Parks on our route.
4
Sankuyo
Day 6-8
The first days of Botswana are now behind us for all of us, including me, because I have not been here yet either. The next drive takes us to Kakoaka, our last stop before the border to Zimbabwe.
5
Kakoaka
Day 8-10
The last nights in Botswana. From here we can explore a bit the surroundings and the neighboring villages. Nearby are for example the Choke National Park, Kuba Pits, Chose Forest Reserve and so on.
6
Matetsi
Day 10-12
Matetsi is a small town in the Zimbabwean province of Matabeleland North. It is located on the road and railroad line from Hwange to Victoria Falls. The place has an asphalt 2000 m long airstrip with terminal. This airfield serves tourism in Hwange National Park and on the Zambezi River.
7
Binga
Day 12-13
Last stop before Zambia! Information about Binga: 154 km northeast of Dete Crossroads. On government instructions, Binga was established in this townless region to settle the victims of the reservoir. Since ancient times, the Tonga had inhabited the Gwembe Valley before it disappeared in the rising tides. During the 1960s, over 100,000 men, women and children lost their ancestral lands. The village is widely tattered between the shore and the hilly hinterland, so that one must be prepared for some dry walks without a vehicle. On the other hand, carved stools, neckrests and drums of the Tonga can be found on the way. In the Craft Centre you will be lucky to find a wooden pangolin - you won't find such a thing anywhere else.
8
Katima Mulilo
Day 13-14
Back to Namibia. We drive over the Caprivi Strip back into Namibia, our first stop will be the town of Katima Mulilo, that appearance of Katima Mulilo is in many respects more "African" compared to other places in Namibia, where you can still feel the influence of the German colonial era. The city has a modern infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, supermarkets and gas stations. Wild elephants live in the vicinity of Katima Mulilo. The regular floods of the Zambezi River bring crocodiles right up to the city limits, in addition to the destruction they cause.
9
Matemwa
Day 14-15
Situated close to the Nkasa Rupara National Park, Matemwa will hopefully offer us a nice opportunity to set up camp, review the trip so far and enjoy the tranquility of the Caprivi Strip.
10
Rundu
Day 15-16
City life in Rundu, Rundu is a city as well as economic center of the Kavango East region in northeastern Namibia. Rundu is the second largest city in Namibia after Windhoek. It is the capital of the Kavango East Region and was previously the capital of the Kavango Region.
11
Tsumeb
Day 16-17
No idea what awaits us here, it was recommended to me as a tip. But I am sure that we will get our money's worth here. The time to plan the next days we will definitely have during our stay.
12
Etosha National Park
Day 17-20
From west to south. The western part of Etosha Park used to be a restricted area. The western part of the park can be reached through the Galton Gate. Located south of the boundary of Etosha National Park in northwestern Namibia, Etosha South forms the southern region of this wild paradise.
13
Otjiwarongo
Day 20-22
Otjiwarongo - meaning "the place of fat cattle" - is a quiet, German-influenced town with plenty of accommodation, stores and other amenities, ideal for a stopover en route to Windhoek, Etosha National Park and the Waterberg Plateau.
14
Waterberg Plateau National Park
Day 22-24
Waterberg Plateau National Park is located in north central Namibia and is named after the springs that emanate from its foothills. The Waterberg Plateau National Park is a fascinating geological site with pressed sandstone cliffs, with ancient dinosaur tracks and fossilized sand dunes.
15
Twyfelfontein
Day 24-26
Twylfelfontein is located in the Kunene region of northwestern Namibia and is a spectacular landscape with one of the largest and most important concentrations of rock art in Africa. The name "Twyfelfontein" translates as "Well of Doubt", referring to the evergreen spring in the impressive Huab Valley, flanked by the slopes of a sandstone mesa.
16
Spitzkoppe
Day 26-28
Located in Namibia's spectacular Namib Desert, between Usakos and Swakopmund, Spitzkoppe is a group of bare granite peaks that form one of Namibia's most famous and dramatic landmarks.
17
Swakopmund
Day 28-30
The quirky mix of German and Namibian influences, adventure opportunities, relaxed atmosphere and cool sea breezes make it a popular destination in Namibia. A fairly German town from which to start good activities.
18
Namib's Valley of a Thousand Hills
Day 30-32
A really incredibly beautiful and simple camp with an indescribable view. Here I was this year and the adjacent area invites you to explore. I can only recommend this, quite young and only since short for tourists accessible area.
19
Sesriem
Day 32-34
Sesriem Canyon, a deep gorge carved by water through the rocks, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot. Stone walls rise on either side of the canyon, while birds nest in the rock walls and lizards scurry over the ledges. The canyon's name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather ("ses riem" - six straps) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the bottom of the canyon.
20
Kolmanskop
Day 34-37
In the former diamond area, we look at how the desert is reclaiming what man once took over. The Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world, and although it stretches along the entire length of Namibia's coastline into southern Angola and even into northern Cape Province, the Namib refers to the vast sea of sand from Lüderitz to Swakopmund.
21
Mariental
Day 37-39
The town of Mariental is located in southern Namibia, near the Kalahari Desert. It lies along the TransNamib railroad and serves as the commercial and administrative capital of the Hardap region. Mariental is also considered the gateway to the Kalahari.
22
Windhoek
Day 39-44
The landscape of the Greater Windhoek area surrounding this bustling city is characterized by wide valleys, dense bush, rocky hills and golden savannah. Visitors can explore the dry riverbeds and mountainous bushveld, birding, leopard spotting and large amounts of wildlife in the north.
