Ciao and welcome to Abruzzo! If you never heard of it... don't worry, we are proud of not being a crowded/touristy place and we love to welcome those who are really interested in finding out more about our old traditions that date back to the Romans. That's why I'm looking for Tripmates who are willing to discover the hidden gems of this ancient region with awareness and involvement. Some call it the Little Tibet, some the Small Middle-Earth, what is sure is that Abruzzo is one of those rare places blessed by a stunning morphology (you could go skiing up to 2000mt and then go swimming in the Adriatic Sea in less than an hour!) and biodiversity. Traditions are still strong here, and you will explore places where the time seems to have stopped. And being in southern Italy, the culture of food is super strong and very recognizable. Autumn might not be the best season to enjoy the pretty beaches we have (but who knows, maybe we are lucky and go for a swim anyway), on the other hand is the best season for taking amazing pictures of the high mountains, the coloured woods and the insane sunsets! This is not meant to be a trip only for photographers, but I want everybody to take their time to grab the best shots they can wheter it's with a professional camera or just with a smartphone. I'm a photography lover myself and I know sometimes you don't get enough time to shoot during trips, so we will take it slow and let everyone enjoy each stop in the best way they want.

About me! I started travelling at the age of 18 and in the past 15 years I've visited more than 20 countries. I'm new on Joinmytrip and for my first guided tour I thought it was a great idea to show you one of the best places I know... my Abruzzo! Just recently some German and Finnish friends came to visit me without knowing absolutely nothing about this place, so I did my best to show them around. Well, they were stunned and told me they were going to tell everybody about this amazing experience! Fun thing, sometimes even people from Italy don't know Abruzzo, so I'm really going to show you something not many travellers know. And I guarantee you will take beautiful photos to show your family and friends or for your personal archive.

Details about the accommodation: Our headquarter will be in Pescara, the main city and the place you need to be to reach Abruzzo either with plane or train. The city centre has a nice pedestrian area that pour directly on the beach, which in autumn will be quiet and free from the summer umbrellas. We will be staying very close to this area, in an apartment with separate bedrooms, nothing fancy but confortable and nearby supermarkets and restaurants. If you have questions about the trip feel free to reach out in the Q&A section on this trip! I will reply to your as soon as possible!

5/5
My experience with Francesco on this tour was extremely positive. He demonstrated an excellent understanding of the region and could spontaneously react to my food preferences (I am vegetarian) and route planning desires. His dedication to the well-being during the travel was particularly impressive. As an interpreter, he proved very competent, aiding me in understanding italian words and conversations. His knowledge of hidden gems and insider tips in the region was remarkable, enabling me to explore off-the-beaten-path locations. His personality was admirable, making my travel experience even more enjoyable. Although he had to work on a few days during the trip, this was communicated in advance and accepted by me. For those evenings he connected me with other cool people or suggested some places to visit. Overall, the travel in Abruzzo was very valuable and relaxing.

Trip Itinerary
1

Pescara

Day 1-2
Our meeting point is Pescara, either the airport or the train station. While we wait for the Tripmates to arrive, we'll have a walk around the city, which is quite new compared to other areas of the region. The town centre has a large pedestrian area that leads directly to the beach. The Ponte del Mare (Sea Bridge) is the main attraction, and offers a great view from the top especially at sunset. Depending on the weather we can relax on the beach or have a Spritz in one of the many bars. When everybody is ready we'll reach our accomodations and have dinner together.
2

Campo Imperatore

Day 2-3
The adventure begins! Pack your camera as we'll have a big day ahead exploring one of the most iconic areas of Abruzzo, the mighty Campo Imperatore (Emperor's Field). It's a huge plateau that you can rarely see in Europe, therefore called the Little Tibet. We'll then move to the medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, have a walk and lunch together. Last gem of the day will be the stunning castle of Rocca Calascio, one the highest castle in Europe. You will never forget the view from the top, insane pictures guaranteed!
3

Atri

Day 3-4
After the previous day, we'll go for something closer to our headquarter, but not less interesting. The area around the old towns of Atri, Silvi and Città S.Angelo can be easily explored thanks to the relatively short distance between them. Atri dates back to Roman times and has a beautiful town centre with a Cathedral and many churches. Also in the area you can see the iconic Calanchi, which is a particular geologic formation due to erosion. Silvi offers probably the best view of the Adriatic Sea from its panoramic viewpoint. If the sky is clear, we'll enjoy a nice wine watching the sunset.
4

Scanno

Day 4-5
Let's go for another big day out! Our main destination is Scanno, the village of photographers. Not many people know that this old village has welcomed some of the most important photographers of XX century, who fell in love with its small road, the traditional clothes, and the view of the near heart-shaped lake. You probably know some of their names, Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Woodward, Hilde Lotz-Bauer and Mario Giacomelli. If it's not too late, on the way back we can stop in Sulmona, home of the traditional italian Confetti for some tastings.
5

Costa dei Trabocchi

Day 5-6
We'll move a bit south following the coastal road the connects Abruzzo to Apulia. A bit in the inland, the Castle of Roccascalegna awaits to be conquered, as nobody has ever been able to do that. You'll figure out why once you see it. Then we'll stop through the coastal town of Fossacesia and San Vito, and visit the old San Giovanni in Venere abbey, with a stunning view on the gulf. The atmosphere is great and the food delicious too!
6

Valle del Tirino

Day 6-7
It's adventure day, and I want to try to show you the more I can from this beautiful area. I have a great range of experiences that go from kayaking on the Tirino river (fee not included), visit the Lavino Spring with its amazing turquoise waters, explore the Eremo di San Bartolomeo, an hermit retreat dug into the mountains, and more. Those are the main ideas but I want to be more flexible on this day and let you choose according to your preferences.
7

Chieti

Day 7-8
For the last day I think it's actually cool to relax and enjoy our countryhouse a little bit more. So no big plans, but a free day we can spend editing our photos, reading or recovering from the past days efforts. If the group agrees, we can go to the beach in Pescara or visit the historical town of Chieti, which is very close.
8

Pescara

Day 8
8️⃣ Time to say goodbye! Depending on the time you leave we'll go back in Pescara and have a walk while we wait for your flight/train. The journey is over, but memories and friendship will stay with us forever!
