Think you've seen it all in Nepal? Think again. The Makalu Base Camp Trek is like the quiet genius in a room full of loud show-offs. Tucked away in eastern Nepal, this trek takes you to the base of Mount Makalu (8,485m)—the fifth-highest mountain in the world, and possibly the most modest. While Everest is busy signing autographs, Makalu is out here giving jaw-dropping views in peaceful silence. The trek starts from Tumlingtar and winds through lush forests, terraced farmlands, and remote Sherpa villages before launching you into high-altitude wilderness. You’ll cross raging rivers (on wobbly suspension bridges that make you question life choices), climb steep ridges, and end up face to face with glaciers and giant Himalayan peaks that look like they belong on another planet.

Hi! I’m a professional high-altitude trekking guide with years of experience leading adventures across Nepal’s most remote and rugged trails. I live for the outdoors, love a good story, and believe every trek should be about more than just the destination—it’s about the people, the laughs, and the memories we create along the way. If you're looking for a safe, fun, and truly unforgettable trek, you’re in the right hands. I specialize in off-the-beaten-path routes like Makalu Base Camp, where you’ll experience raw Himalayan beauty, peaceful trails, and authentic mountain culture—without the crowds. What to expect? Challenging climbs, epic views, quiet valleys, and moments that take your breath away (literally and figuratively). This trek is all about adventure, connection, and memories that stick. Let’s share stories, chase summits, and make this a once-in-a-lifetime journey.

During the Makalu Base Camp Trek, accommodation will be mostly in local lodges and basic tea houses along the route. These are simple but cozy, offering a warm place to rest after a long day on the trail. In the lower villages, you may stay in guesthouses or homestays, and in more remote areas, camping may be necessary depending on lodge availability. Private rooms are available in some places, especially at lower altitudes, but shared rooms and common facilities are more common as we go higher. No matter where we stay, you can expect clean, friendly hospitality and a real taste of mountain life.

Yangle Kharka

Day 13-14
The trail today retraces the steps back through the glacier valley, offering a different perspective on the landscape. The descent is easier compared to the previous ascent, providing relief for tired legs and an opportunity to appreciate the stunning surroundings from a new angle. As trekkers move downhill, they pass familiar scenic spots—glacial lakes, cascading waterfalls, and alpine meadows—but now, with the changing light and the view from below, the scenery feels refreshed and more vibrant. The towering peaks of Makalu, Everest, and Lhotse remain in the distance, their grandeur still captivating. The experience of retracing your steps also allows time to reflect on the journey so far, with each step down offering a deeper connection to the natural beauty of the area. Dobate Hotel and Lodge ( Makalu Barun Lodge branch)

Day 14-15
As trekkers begin their journey back, the scenery shifts to lush forest trails and frequent river crossings, offering a familiar yet equally enchanting experience. The trail weaves through dense forests of pine and rhododendron, with the cool, shaded paths providing a pleasant contrast to the open alpine meadows. The sound of rushing rivers accompanies trekkers as they cross wooden bridges, the water flowing swiftly below, creating an ever-changing backdrop of nature’s rhythm. This section of the trek is also an excellent opportunity for wildlife sightings. Keep an eye out for blue sheep, also known as Bharal, which are often spotted grazing along the rocky cliffs and meadows. Their surefootedness and camouflaged gray-blue coats make them well-suited for the rugged terrain. The vibrant Himalayan monal, Nepal’s national bird, can also be seen flitting through the forest or perched on rocks, with its striking plumage adding a splash of color to the otherwise green and earthy surroundings. The return journey through these diverse landscapes is both peaceful and rewarding, offering a chance to reflect on the adventure while being immersed once again in the beauty of the natural world. The combination of serene forests, river crossings, and the thrill of spotting wildlife makes this part of the trek a delightful and memorable experience.
15

Khongma Danda

Day 15-16
The final leg of the journey presents a challenge with steep ups and downs, as trekkers cross the passes once more. The terrain becomes more demanding, with the path winding up and down through rocky slopes, requiring careful footing and steady determination. Reaching the top of the passes again offers a sense of accomplishment, but the physical effort is still considerable, particularly as the altitude gradually decreases. However, these challenging ascents and descents are also an opportunity for reflection. The final alpine views before dropping lower are some of the most breathtaking of the trek. The towering peaks of Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, and other nearby giants stand tall in the distance, their snow-capped summits still visible, even as you begin to descend into the lower valleys. The landscape feels even more immense from this vantage point, as the sheer scale of the mountains and the surrounding wilderness becomes more apparent. These moments of reflection allow trekkers to appreciate the journey so far—the challenges, the triumphs, and the extraordinary landscapes experienced along the way. As the trail begins to wind downward, it provides a fitting farewell to the high-altitude environment, marking the transition from the rugged mountain terrain to the gentler slopes of the lower regions.
16

Tashi Gaon

Day 16-17
As the trek descends, the experience shifts dramatically with the return to lush, green valleys, where the landscape is vibrant and full of life. The once-barren alpine terrain gives way to fertile fields, terraced farmland, and thick forests, creating a comforting contrast to the rugged heights previously navigated. The air becomes warmer, the sounds of nature softer, and the path winds through charming villages, where the cultural warmth of the local communities becomes increasingly apparent. This part of the trek offers an optional chance to engage more deeply with the local culture by visiting local homes or schools. Stepping into a Sherpa home, trekkers can experience the hospitality of the people, offering an insight into their way of life, traditional practices, and warm-heartedness. It’s also an opportunity to learn about the community’s daily life, perhaps sharing a cup of tea or learning about the farming methods that sustain them. Visiting local schools gives trekkers a chance to interact with the younger generation, learning about their education and aspirations. These visits foster a deeper connection to the region, allowing trekkers to appreciate not only the natural beauty but also the cultural richness of the area. It’s a rewarding way to reflect on the journey and gain a fuller understanding of the people who call this beautiful region home.
17

Num

Day 17-18
On the final day of the trek, trekkers retrace their steps back to Num, following the Arun River valley once again. This section of the journey is a more relaxed and reflective experience, as the trail gently winds through the valley, offering a final opportunity to take in the natural beauty of the region. The trail dips and rises, taking trekkers through dense forests, past terraced fields, and over small wooden bridges, all while following the meandering path of the Arun River. As you make your way back, you get one last close look at the hills and farms of eastern Nepal. The vibrant green terraces, small farming villages, and the rhythm of daily life in the rural areas offer a peaceful and picturesque view. The views of the surrounding hills and valleys are rich with the colors of the landscape, dotted with traditional houses and small communities. This final stretch provides a fitting farewell to the region, allowing trekkers to reflect on the journey and appreciate the beauty and culture of the eastern Nepali countryside one last time before returning to Num.
18

Tumlingtar Airport

Day 18-19
The journey back to civilization begins with a 5–6 hour jeep ride through the winding roads of forests and hills, offering a scenic drive through the varied landscapes of eastern Nepal. As the jeep moves along the winding tracks, the lush greenery of the forests gradually gives way to rolling hills, small settlements, and distant mountain views. The journey is a comfortable transition from the high-altitude wilderness back to a more developed area, but the changing scenery keeps the ride interesting, with glimpses of local life, rivers, and terraced fields along the way. Upon arrival, trekkers can enjoy a well-deserved rest in a comfortable guesthouse. This offers a chance to clean up, relax, and reflect on the adventure. The amenities of the guesthouse provide a welcome contrast to the rustic conditions of the trek, with hot showers, a comfortable bed, and a warm meal to rejuvenate after days of trekking. It’s the perfect place to unwind, reflect on the journey, and share stories with fellow trekkers. The calm atmosphere of the guesthouse is an ideal environment for resting and recharging before continuing the journey or returning home.
19

Kathmandu

Day 19-20
After the trek, a scenic flight offers a spectacular return to the capital, providing an aerial view of the majestic mountains that were once part of your journey.
