When Herculaneum was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius, the very high temperatures and depth of the volcanic matter resulted in the preservation of organic matter such as food, fabrics, furnishings, and wooden parts of buildings. The upper stories of the buildings were also preserved. After lunch we then reach the nearby excavated ruins of Oplontis and visit the Villa Poppea, which may have belonged to the second wife of Nero. Included Meals: Breakfast, and Lunch.
