Trip Itinerary
1
Bari
Day 1
Defined as a preeminent city where traditions and intense flavors flourish in their most genuine expression, Bari is going to be our first stop. Right after having met at the airport, in fact, we are going to visit this old treasure, usually overshadowed by the more famous southern Italian cities such as Naples and Palermo. In Bari, we’ll explore “Via delle Orecchiette”, a very particular narrow street where local old women perform an open-air exhibition, with their countless racks on which they display fresh pasta 🍝. We’ll also visit Basilica di San Nicola, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, and El Chiringuito: it may look like a simple seaside kiosk, but for the people of Bari it is a historic hangout in front of the dock full of boats and alive with fishermen at work.
2
Alberobello
Day 1-7
This trip main stop: Alberobello is famed in Italy for its characteristic Trulli, a constructive model of spontaneous architecture, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996! Here we will be able to fully immerse in the special atmosphere of the ancient village, comparable to nothing else in the world, while living in a real Trullo close to this amazing village. We will visit the place multiples times during the weekdays, in order to experience its narrow streets, small stores and restaurants as proper locals. During a half-day, we will also rent bikes to fully enjoy the Apulian countryside, discovering the surroundings of Alberobello.
3
Monopoli
Day 7
Monopoli, on the other hand, is definitely the least known of our destinations. But I assure you, you will fall in love with the narrow streets of the old town and the historic fort that was used to protect it. During our morning, we will participate in a walking tour of the town, guided by a real local, to discover the history of Monopoli, through quaint medieval streets whitewashed with lime milk, beautiful Baroque friezes and glimpses of magnificent coves on the Adriatic Sea 🌊. Between panoramic overlooks, we'll savour typical Monopoli products! In the afternoon we will relax on one of the most beautiful beaches of the area!
4
Matera
Day 7
If the group is willing to, it will also be possible to depart for a day trip and visit the gorgeous Matera, in the Basilicata Region (honestly really recommended 😬). Defined as “one of the most interesting, unusual and memorable tourist destinations in Italy”, Matera is famous for its “Sassi” (Stones), a complex of houses, churches, monasteries and hermitages built into the natural caves of the Murgia.
5
Ostuni
Day 7
Ostuni, the "White City", perched on a hill in the Murge, is a little gem to explore slowly. The town can be visited (strictly on foot) in a day, before heading off to discover the most beautiful beaches in the area. During the morning, before reaching the city centre, we will visit the Masseria Capece, where we will have a guided tour with olive oil tasting. Before the tasting, we will walk among the thousand-year-old olive trees, which are said to have been planted by veterans of the Punic Wars more than 2,000 years ago, and then learn how extra virgin olive oil is produced and visit the oil mill.
6
Polignano a Mare
Day 7
Perhaps the most touristy of our destinations, Polignano a Mare will still manage to give us magical moments. If, in fact, during the summer the renowned glimpse of the sea between two sheer walls draws crowds of Italians on vacation, early May will allow us to visit the town with more tranquility and less bustling, letting us capture the true essence of Polignano. In the afternoon, we will take part in a guided boat trip. On board we will be provided with towels, snorkelling equipment and personalised goggles. We will then explore the Grotta Palazzese, before taking a dip in the pristine waters of Puglia. And after a refreshing swim, we'll toast with a complimentary prosecco and Apulian taralli on the way back to Polignano a Mare.
