Details about this trip
South Africa is a top destination for wildlife photography enthusiasts, with its vast and varied range of fauna and flora. A photographic safari in South Africa offers a unique opportunity to capture stunning images of wildlife in their natural habitat, including the famous Big Five animals: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos and rhinos. At MaiaWildlife we offer guided photographic safaris, where experienced guides take visitors on game drives in specially adapted vehicles to get up close and personal with the animals. These safaris are designed to provide excellent photographic opportunities, with guides using their knowledge of animal behavior and the landscape to position the vehicle for the best possible shots. Photographic safaris in South Africa are not just about capturing the perfect shot; they also offer a chance to learn about conservation efforts and the challenges facing wildlife in the region. We have dedicated conservation programs that visitors can get involved in, such as tracking and monitoring wildlife, or participating in community outreach projects. Overall, a photographic safari in South Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers an amazing opportunity to capture stunning images of wildlife in their natural habitats, while also contributing to conservation efforts and learning about the local culture.

I’m Henrique Maia — zoologist, expedition leader, and wildlife photographer. I founded MaiaWildlife with a simple purpose: to take people into the heart of Africa and other extraordinary destinations, and show them wildlife as it truly is — up close, unhurried, and with real understanding. I personally lead every expedition, always in small groups, because I believe the best way to experience nature is without crowds and without rushing. My background in zoology means we don’t just watch animals — we understand them: their behaviour, their role in the ecosystem, and the challenges they face. What sets these trips apart is the access to real conservation work in the field. At Dinokeng in South Africa, we’ve witnessed genuine operations up close — lion collaring, elephant collar adjustments, snare removal from buffalo, and cheetah relocation. These are moments very few travellers ever get to experience. I lead photographic expeditions across South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania, Uganda, India, and Brazil. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or simply in love with the natural world, you’ll come home with images — and stories — that last a lifetime.

You’ll stay at Tendeni Private Lodge, one of the newest 4-star lodges in the reserve. Its open-plan units are each furnished with a king-size bed or twin singles and a ceiling fan, with a private indoor bathroom — toilet, shower and bathtub. At the heart of the lodge is a welcoming lapa, where guests gather to relax: a lounge, fully equipped kitchen, dining area and bar. Outside there’s a traditional braai and a swimming pool for the hours between safari activities. If you've ever dreamed of photographing Africa's iconic wildlife while gaining a deeper understanding of the animals, ecosystems, and conservation efforts that protect them, this expedition is for you. Whether you're an experienced photographer or simply passionate about wildlife and nature, you'll enjoy extraordinary encounters, expert guidance, and unforgettable moments in the African bush. Ready for the adventure? 👉 Have questions about photography equipment, fitness requirements, accommodation, safari activities, or what to expect during the expedition? Feel free to ask in the Q&A section. I'd be delighted to help and look forward to sharing this incredible wildlife adventure with you.

Dinokeng Game Reserve

Day 1-2
Depending of your arrival time, maybe we still have time for our first safari at Dinokeng Game Reserve. Dinokeng is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Gauteng, set in a malaria-free region, which makes it a comfortable and safe place to be on safari. Covering around 26,000 hectares, the reserve is home to the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino — all roaming freely across the protected landscape. It’s also a conservation-focused reserve, built on a model where eco-tourism supports local development and protection of wildlife. Through sustainable tourism, Dinokeng helps create long-term employment and opportunity for the surrounding rural communities. And this is conservation we’re part of, not just guests of: here, our travellers have worked alongside the reserve team on real operations — collaring lions and elephants, removing a snare from a buffalo, relocating a cheetah. The name Dinokeng comes from the languages of the baTswana and baPedi people and means “place of rivers” — given for the many rivers and watercourses that run through the area before joining the Limpopo and the Orange.

Day 2
Each day is carefully balanced between time spent in the reserve and opportunities to relax, explore, and fully absorb everything this experience has to offer. This is what a typical day on the expedition looks like. We start early, when wildlife is at its most active. Shortly after sunrise, we set out on our morning safari in Dinokeng. These game drives usually last between two and a half and three hours, providing ample time to encounter a remarkable diversity of wildlife during their morning activities, including the famous Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. Upon returning to Tendeni Private Lodge, a peaceful and leisurely breakfast awaits us. (Please note that timings may vary depending on weather conditions, wildlife behaviour, and planned activities. Flexibility is an essential part of any expedition and is often what leads to the most memorable and rewarding moments of the journey.)

Day 2-3
A light lunch is served at around 2:00 pm, either at the lodge or at the activity location, depending on the programme planned for the day. During the afternoon, usually around 4:00 pm, we return to the reserve for the second safari of the day. Another two and a half to three hours of exploration await us, now under the best light for photography, when the landscape takes on golden tones and predators become active once again as the temperature begins to cool. Dinner is served at approximately 8:00 pm, featuring dishes inspired by African flavours in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. The evening then unfolds at a leisurely pace: a drink at the bar, stories shared from the day’s sightings, and the unmistakable sounds of the African night in the background. (Please note that timings may vary depending on weather conditions, wildlife behaviour, and planned activities. Flexibility is an essential part of any safari and is often what creates the most memorable moments of the journey.)

Adventures With Elephants🐘

Day 3
Although the exact numbers are debated among different studies, African elephant populations have experienced a significant decline over the past decades due to poaching and habitat loss. For this reason, we take great pride in contributing to the protection and well-being of these magnificent animals. More than that, we have the privilege of offering a unique experience of learning about and connecting with elephants, allowing visitors to observe them up close and gain a deeper understanding of their intelligence, behaviour, and vital role within African ecosystems. We believe that by creating this connection, we help foster greater awareness and appreciation for the future of elephants and many other species across a continent that is constantly evolving. (Please note that timings may vary depending on weather conditions, wildlife behaviour, and planned activities. Flexibility is an essential part of any safari and is often what creates the most memorable moments of the journey.)
