DAY ONE: Sunday - Arrival in Osaka 3:30pm β Private group taxi pickup from Kansai International Airport (KIX). Aim to land between roughly 12:00pm and 2:00pm to allow time for immigration, baggage, SIM card pickup, and meeting at the pickup point. Guests arriving outside this window, or from another location, are responsible for their own transfer to the apartment, but I'm happy to help arrange it. Late afternoon β Arrive at our townhouse in Naniwa Ward. Settle into your private room, discover your welcome gift waiting for you and unwind from the flight. Evening β Meet in the common area for our welcome dinner at a local Osaka restaurant. This will be a warm, delicious introduction to Japanese cuisine and to each other. We'll return to the apartment for a restful first night. DAY TWO: Monday - Coffee, Chopstick Workshop & Free Osaka Day Morning β Breakfast at the apartment at your own pace, then meet around 8:30am to head out together.

Late morning β Visit a favorite local coffee shop, then meet our English-speaking artisan for a 1-hour Traditional Chopstick Making Workshop. Choose from 30 types of wood, learn about each one's character, then carve, shape, smooth, and polish your own chopsticks with expert guidance. You'll leave with a beautiful, practical souvenir ready to use immediately.

Midday (optional add-on) β Wagyu Steak & Sashimi Lunch with Sake Pairing ($95/β¬84). A 1.5-hour hosted lunch with a local chef at their restaurant. Guests not joining are free to grab lunch independently, head back to the apartment, or explore Osaka on their own. Afternoon β Free time to explore, rest, or wander independently.

Evening (optional add-on) β Osaka Backstreet Dining Food Tour ($113/β¬100). A 3-hour local food tour through Tenjinbashi with 4 stops (octopus dumplings, counter sushi, yakiniku wagyu, ramen) and 2 included drinks. Guests not joining are free to enjoy Osaka independently.

Return to the apartment for the evening. DAY THREE: Tuesday - Nara Day Trip Early morning β We'll have an early breakfast at the apartment (or pack one to bring on the train). Then we'll depart together by train. The early start means arriving at Nara Park before the tour buses is more than worth it.

Day 3
~8:00am β We'll arrive at Nara Park. Walk through the peaceful morning grounds toward Todai-ji as its gates open. Pass through Nandaimon Gate, enter the Daibutsuden to stand before the Great Buddha, climb up to Nigatsu-do Hall for sweeping views, and wander a classical Japanese garden (Isuien or Yoshikien). Lunch β Around Higashimuki Shopping Street (own expense with plenty of local restaurants & cafΓ©s to choose from). Afternoon β Wander Naramachi, Nara's atmospheric old merchant district, before heading back to Osaka by train.

Day 3-4
~4:30pm β Arrive back at the apartment and enjoy a free evening to relax, grab dinner independently, or enjoy your last night in Osaka. DAY FOUR: Wednesday: - Osaka to Kyoto & Mindful Tea Ceremony Morning β Breakfast at the apartment at your own pace. Meet around 9:30am for check-out and our train journey to Kyoto.

Late morning β Arrive at Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shinmachi Bettei to drop off bags. Then head to Nishiki Market for lunch (own expense) and explore Kyoto's 400-year-old covered market with tofu shops, tea merchants, pickles, and street food. Early afternoon β Return to the hotel to check in, freshen up in your room, and enjoy a couple of hours to unwind.

Late afternoon/early evening β Mindful Tea Ceremony with a Local Tea Master in a 100-year-old Kyoto teahouse. Sip welcome tea, watch the host prepare matcha in candlelight surrounded by hanging scrolls and ancient tea bowls, share a quiet Q&A, and take home a Japanese candle as a souvenir.

Learn to prepare vinegared sushi rice, hand-shape nigiri, and roll traditional maki. Lunch is included, you'll eat what you make. Afternoon β Free time to shop, explore, or rest.

Early evening β Meet for our Walking Gion Cultural Orientation & History Masterclass with a local guide. Over 2.5 hours, we'll walk through Shirakawa canal, Tatsumi shrine, the massive Chion-in temple gate, Maruyama Park, Nene no Michi, Ninenzaka, the iconic Yasaka Pagoda, Yasui Kompira shrine, and Hanamikoji. This is timed for golden hour when the lanterns light and Gion is at its most magical.

Evening β Return to the hotel. Dinner at your leisure (own expense). Alternatively, those not joining have a leisurely free morning to sleep in, soak in the public bath, revisit favorite spots, or explore independently.

Depart by bullet train to visit Japan's most spectacular surviving original castle, UNESCO-listed and nestled among the peak autumn foliage of Koko-en. A casual local lunch will be included. Return by early afternoon.

DAY SEVEN: Saturday - Optional Fushimi Inari Hike & Optional Philosopher's Path or Free Day Morning β Enjoy the included breakfast buffet at the hotel before starting your day. Those joining the optional morning hike will meet in the lobby after breakfast. Others can have a relaxed morning sleeping in and relaxing, or explore independently.

Late afternoon β Those who wish to join for a relaxed stroll through the picturesque foliage will meet for our included Autumn Philosopher's Path & Nanzen-ji Walk, a relaxed stroll along Kyoto's most peaceful canal path, lined with fiery maple trees in November. Not up to another walk? Opt out guilt-free and enjoy the last afternoon in Kyoto on your own.

Evening β Return for a free evening to enjoy your final night in Kyoto. DAY EIGHT: Sunday - Kyoto to Hikone & Lake Biwa Sunset Morning β Start with a slow breakfast at the hotel. Take the late start to sleep in, revisit a favorite coffee spot, or take a soak in the onsen. 11:00am β Meet in the lobby to check out and store bags. Midday β Relaxed lunch at a local restaurant (own expense), then we'll collect our bags and take the train to Hikone. This shift from cultural Kyoto to lakeside Hikone is an intentional resetting point after a week of active travel and city energy.

Afternoon β Arrive at Kamenoi Hotel Hikone in the afternoon. Check into your Deluxe Room with Private View Bath, unpack, and enjoy free time. Late afternoon β Meet for our Lake Biwa Sunset Walk along the lakeshore. Evening β Included traditional kaiseki ryokan dinner featuring A5-grade Omi beef. Free evening to soak in the onsen, take a private bath in your room, or relax. DAY NINE: Monday - Hikone Castle, Genkyuen Gardens & Slow Lakeside Day Morning β Slow start after the included ryokan breakfast. Enjoy the morning near the lake with a walk along the shore, soak in the onsen or your private tub, or read in your room.

Late morning β Our group will get together and visit Hikone Castle (one of only twelve original castles left in Japan) and the adjacent Genkyuen Gardens, built in 1677 with maples that peak in mid-late November. Lunch β Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Hikone (own expense). Afternoon β Free time for shopping and exploring Hikone.

Day 9-10
Evening β Return to the ryokan for a free evening and the second included kaiseki dinner. DAY TEN: Tuesday - Hikone to Tokyo (via Mt. Fuji Views) Morning β Enjoy your final ryokan breakfast and another relaxed morning by the lake. Late morning β Check out and begin our train journey to Tokyo, our longest travel day. On clear days, keep your eyes to the window as this route offers one of the most iconic unobstructed views of Mt. Fuji from the shinkansen. I'll let you know when and where to look. Lunch β Pick up an ekiben (train station bento) at Maibara or Nagoya (own expense), one of Japan's great travel rituals.

Afternoon β We'll arrive in Tokyo and check into our house in Minowa. Take a couple of hours to rest and recharge. Early evening β We'll out together to explore the neighborhood and orient ourselves, then decide together on a nearby local restaurant for dinner (own expense). Night β Return to the house for the evening. DAY ELEVEN: Wednesday - Optional Kawagoe Day Trip & Optional Shinjuku Nightlife or Free Day Morning β Settle into Toyko with a relaxed breakfast at your own pace in the house. The day will your choice of optional activities or free time.

Day 11
Morning (optional add-on) β Kawagoe "Little Edo" Day Trip ($50/β¬44). After breakfast, we'll take the train to Kawagoe to explore the historic Kurazukuri Zone, photograph the iconic Toki no Kane bell tower, and wander Kashiya Yokocho for handmade Japanese sweets, purple sweet potato ice cream, and giant black-sugar rice crackers. Includes lunch in the historic quarter. Return to Tokyo in the early afternoon. Guests not joining are free to have a relaxed day exploring Tokyo independently. I'm happy to recommend neighborhoods, cafΓ©s, and museums based on your interests.

A must for anyone who loves (or is curious about) Japanese pop culture. Midday β We will take a break & grab lunch at a local restaurant (own expense).

Afternoon β After lunch we'll head to Nakano Broadway, the legendary 1966-built shopping complex that has become a world-famous mecca for vintage manga, retro toys, cel art, anime memorabilia, and collectibles with multiple floors of Mandarake stores drawing serious collectors from around the world. Enjoy plenty of free time to explore on your own.

Morning (optional add-on) β Zen Meditation Experience with a Monk in a Private Temple ($55/β¬49). Take the train to a hidden 400-year-old Buddhist temple. Learn zazen posture and breathing from a monk, meditate in silence, try simple Japanese calligraphy, and enjoy matcha with traditional sweets. Please wear modest, comfortable clothing (pants that are easy to sit in, shoulders covered) out of respect for the temple space. Guests not joining can have a slow, relaxed morning at the house.

Enjoy a seasonal dance to live shamisen music, matcha and Japanese sweets, an Edo-period tatami mat game, and a commemorative photo with real geishas led by the proprietor, a former geisha. Dusk β For those on the geisha experience, we'll walk out into the autumn dusk through Kaminarimon and Nakamise-dori to photograph Senso-ji Temple under its spectacular evening illumination.

Walk the historic neighnorhood Yanaka Ginza in the morning as artisan shops, wood-block print vendors, and street-food stalls freshly open. Stop at Yanaka Coffee to watch raw green coffee beans roasted to order, then sip fresh brews in the beautifully nostalgic, mid-century shitamachi setting.

Late morning/early afternoon β Return to the house for a relaxed few hours. Order lunch in, start packing, or squeeze in one last Tokyo errand. Evening β We will get together and head out for our optional farewell dinner (own expense) at a favorite local restaurant. A perfect way to close out our two weeks together. Those who don't wish to join can spend their last night exploring culinary options independently, or relax back at the house. DAY FIFTEEN: Sunday - Departure Morning β Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the house and finish packing. 12:00pm β Check-out. Our private taxi arrives to take the group to Narita International Airport (NRT). Guests flying out of Haneda (HND) or continuing on to another location within Tokyo can be helped to arrange separate transportation at their own expense, just let me know your plans.
