🌕 Hoi An Full Moon Lantern Festival 🏮
Details about this trip
‼️ I may be changing this trip to February of 2027, but have not finalized details yet. ‼️ ✨ Discover the Magic of Vietnam: From Emerald Bays to Lantern-Lit Streets ✨ This 14-night luxury adventure through Northern and Central Vietnam is designed for travelers who want to experience the country's breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and extraordinary cuisine without sacrificing comfort or missing the moments that matter. From the limestone karsts of Halong Bay to the ancient streets of Hoi An glowing with lanterns during the monthly Full Moon Festival, this journey weaves together bucket-list destinations, authentic cultural immersions, and carefully selected luxury accommodations. You'll cruise through emerald waters on a luxury junk boat, ride an overnight train through misty mountains, cycle through rice paddies, learn the secrets of Vietnamese coffee and tea, and witness one of Southeast Asia's most magical traditions; the Hoi An Lantern Festival. Every detail has been thoughtfully curated. All you have to do is show up and soak it in. Open to just 3 travelers plus your guide (me!). ✨ Why Vietnam in December ✨ December is one of the best times to visit Northern and Central Vietnam. The summer heat and monsoon rains have passed, leaving behind pleasant temperatures, lower humidity, and clear skies perfect for cruising, exploring, and photography. In the north, expect cool, comfortable weather ideal for exploring Hanoi's bustling Old Quarter and cruising the calm waters of Halong Bay. In Central Vietnam, Hue and Hoi An enjoy mild, dry conditions: perfect for wandering ancient streets and attending the magical Lantern Festival under clear night skies. And with the trip ending on Christmas Eve morning, you'll have the option to extend your Vietnam adventure through the holidays, or fly home just in time to celebrate with loved ones (especially convenient for those in the West, thanks to the time difference). 🗺️ The Active Luxury Adventurer 🗺️ This trip is designed for travelers who want to experience Vietnam fully; not from a distance, but up close, with all senses engaged. It's for those who believe luxury isn't just about thread counts and turndown service (though you'll have plenty of both), but about extraordinary experiences, seamless logistics, and access to moments most travelers never find. This is an active luxury adventure. You'll move through multiple destinations, wake early for sunrise moments, board boats and trains and cable cars, walk ancient streets and climb to panoramic viewpoints. You'll be rewarded with bucket-list experiences at every turn, but this isn't a trip where you lounge by the pool for two weeks.

This journey takes you through the very best of Northern and Central Vietnam, weaving together landscapes, cultures, and experiences that showcase the country's extraordinary diversity. 🏍️ Hanoi — The Soul of Vietnam Vietnam's capital is a city of contrasts: ancient and modern, chaotic and charming, fast-paced yet steeped in tradition. Founded over 1,000 years ago, Hanoi is the cultural heart of the nation, where French colonial architecture stands alongside centuries-old temples, and motorbikes weave through narrow alleyways that have changed little in generations. The Old Quarter, our home base, is a living museum of 36 ancient streets, each historically dedicated to a specific trade. Today, these bustling lanes overflow with street food vendors, traditional craft shops, hidden temples, and some of the best coffee culture in Asia. This is where you'll taste legendary phở, sip egg coffee in tucked-away cafés, and watch daily life unfold at a pace that feels both urgent and timeless. Hanoi rewards those who wander. Around every corner, you'll discover something unexpected: a 900-year-old pagoda, a tiny alley restaurant packed with locals, a serene lake offering respite from the beautiful chaos. It's sensory, soulful, and utterly captivating. 🍜 ⛴️ Halong Bay & Lan Ha Bay — A World of Limestone and Emerald Waters Few places on Earth match the ethereal beauty of Halong Bay. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this breathtaking seascape features nearly 2,000 limestone karsts and islands rising dramatically from emerald waters, draped in mist and jungle vegetation. It's the stuff of legends, and indeed, local mythology says the islands were created by dragons descending from the heavens. While Halong Bay draws the crowds, neighboring Lan Ha Bay remains quieter and arguably even more stunning. With over 400 islands, pristine beaches, floating fishing villages, and hidden lagoons accessible only by kayak, Lan Ha offers the magic of Halong without the tourist congestion. Cruising these waters is a bucket-list experience. Imagine waking up surrounded by towering karsts reflected in glassy water, kayaking through hidden caves, swimming in secluded coves, and watching the sunset paint the limestone gold and amber from a jacuzzi on the sundeck. It's nature at its most spectacular and we'll have two nights to soak it all in. 🛶 🏞️ Ninh Binh — Halong Bay on Land Just two hours south of Hanoi lies one of Vietnam's most dramatic and underrated landscapes. Ninh Binh, often called "Halong Bay on land," features the same towering limestone karsts, but here they rise from an emerald sea of rice paddies, winding rivers, and lotus-filled wetlands. The region's star attraction is the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you'll glide through a maze of caves, grottoes, and towering rock formations on a traditional rowboat. The silence, broken only by the gentle splash of oars, is mesmerizing. But Ninh Binh offers more than boat rides. Climb the 500 steps of Hang Mua Peak and you'll be rewarded with one of Vietnam's most iconic views: a panorama of karst mountains, rivers, and rice fields stretching to the horizon. Cycle through peaceful villages to ancient pagodas built into cliffsides. This is rural Vietnam at its most beautiful, and a world away from the bustle of the cities. 🚴🏽‍♀️ 🏯 Hue — The Imperial Soul Hue is Vietnam at its most majestic and melancholic. For nearly 150 years, this city on the banks of the Perfume River served as the imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, and its legacy is written in grand citadels, ornate royal tombs, and elegant pagodas. The Imperial City; a vast complex of palaces, temples, and gardens enclosed by massive walls and a moat, was modeled after Beijing's Forbidden City. Though much was damaged during the Vietnam War, ongoing restoration has brought back its grandeur, and walking through its halls and courtyards is a journey into Vietnam's royal past. Beyond the citadel, Hue's emperors built elaborate tombs in the surrounding hills, each reflecting the personality of its occupant. The romantic, poetry-filled grounds of Tu Duc's Tomb and the ornate, European-influenced Khai Dinh Tomb are masterpieces of design and craftsmanship. But Hue isn't only about history. The city is renowned for its distinctive cuisine, from the iconic bún bò Huế (spicy beef noodle soup) to elaborate royal dishes served in banana leaf parcels. And the Perfume River, named for the flowers that fall into its waters upstream, lends the city a romantic, almost dreamlike atmosphere, especially at sunset. 🌸 🏮 Hoi An — Where Time Stands Still (And Lanterns Light the Night) If there's one place in Vietnam that captures travelers' hearts and never lets go, it's Hoi An. This ancient trading port, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has preserved its charming architecture and cultural traditions better than anywhere else in the country. Walking through its narrow streets, past mustard-yellow merchant houses, Chinese temples, the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, and hundreds of silk lanterns. feels like stepping back in time. From the 15th to 19th centuries, Hoi An was one of Southeast Asia's most important trading ports, welcoming merchants from China, Japan, India, and Europe. This multicultural heritage lives on in the town's architecture, cuisine, and traditions; a beautiful blend of influences found nowhere else. Today, Hoi An is famous for three things: its world-class tailors who can create custom clothing in just days, its extraordinary food scene (don't miss the legendary Cao Lầu noodles, found only here), and the magical Full Moon Lantern Festival held every lunar month when electric lights are switched off and thousands of silk lanterns and candles illuminate the ancient town. Beyond the old town, Hoi An offers beautiful beaches, countryside bicycle rides through rice paddies and water buffalo, basket boat rides through coconut forests, and easy access to Ba Na Hills and the famous Golden Bridge. With four nights here, the longest stay of our journey, you'll have time to wander, shop, eat, relax, and experience the Lantern Festival without feeling rushed. 👘 ⛰️ Ba Na Hills & The Golden Bridge — Vietnam's Mountain Fantasy Perched high in the Truong Son Mountains outside Da Nang, Ba Na Hills is unlike anywhere else in Vietnam. What began as a French colonial hill station in the early 1900s has been transformed into a fantastical mountaintop resort featuring French-style villages, immaculate gardens, pagodas, and one of the most photographed landmarks in the country: the Golden Bridge. The journey up is an experience in itself. One of the world's longest cable car systems carries you over 5,000 feet through mist, jungle, and dramatic ravines, offering jaw-dropping views at every turn. At the summit, the Golden Bridge awaits: a stunning pedestrian walkway appearing to be held aloft by giant stone hands emerging from the mountainside, with panoramic views stretching to the distant coast. Beyond the bridge, you can stroll through the fairytale French Village with its Gothic architecture and cobblestone streets, wander the beautiful Le Jardin D'Amour Gardens, visit the serene Linh Ung Pagoda, and explore the Fantasy Park amusement attractions. 🏰 🪭 The Journey as a Whole What makes this itinerary special isn't just the individual destinations, it's how they flow together to tell the story of Vietnam. You'll begin in the energetic, food-obsessed capital. Cruise through one of the world's natural wonders. Glide through rice paddies and climb to mountaintop viewpoints. Board an overnight train through misty mountains. Explore imperial citadels and royal tombs. And finally, settle into an ancient town glowing with lanterns as the full moon rises. Each destination builds on the last, creating a journey that's varied, immersive, and unforgettable. 🌅
