About me

Hi, we are Birgit & Raffael! Travelling isn't just a hobby for us, it's our purpose. Originally from Vienna, Austria, we have explored over 75 countries, from Antarctica to Japan. Why travel with us? Birgit: My first international travel one year ago led me to the Netherlands and must have sparked my interest in discovering the world. Travelling is about connecting with the local culture, which is why I am also always so eager to learn the local language. Raffael: I combine the heart of an adventurer with the strategic mindset of a founder. With a foundation in Tourism & Hospitality, a Master in Sustainability, Entrepreneurship & Technology and bachelor in Startup Management, I ensure our trips are professionally organized & impact-driven. Together with Birgit, we created Symbiotic Guides. Our philosophy: We travel to connect, not just to consume. Our Mission: We design expeditions that directly support local communities. Whether it’s hiring local guides, staying in family-run guesthouses, or eating where the locals eat—we ensure our presence benefits the people who call these places home. Expect deep dives, active days, and a group vibe that feels like travelling with friends.

I have a solid foundation in the industry, having attended a vocational high school for Tourism and Hospitality in Austria. I also spent impactful years abroad, including a year volunteering in Central America (Costa Rica & Guatemala), which taught me the value of immersive, slow travel. I've also published a book about traveling during the pandemic.
I am fully focused on building Symbiotic Guides and organizing unique small-group expeditions. My highlight for 2026 is our 'Desert Heart Expedition' to Jordan—a deep dive into Bedouin culture and hiking. I'm also scouting new routes in the Alps for our future projects.
Country: Hard to pick from 70! But Jordan for the hospitality, Costa Rica for the nature, and Austria for the mountains are my top 3. Book: "Let My People Go Surfing" by Yvon Chouinard (for the philosophy) & "Who Moved My Cheese?" (for the mindset). Quote: "Life is no longer the same if you decide that your dreams are more important than the opinion of others!
To understand the world and myself better. I believe that shared experiences in nature create the strongest bonds between people. I travel to challenge my comfort zone and to find those moments of awe that you can't get from a screen.
