About me

Hi there! My name is Pedro! I am a fellow travelling enthusiast, originally from the northeastern mountainous area of Portugal known as Trás-os-Montes. I have been fortunate enough to be able to enjoy some of this world's magnificent human and natural treasures and I plan on doing so as often as I can. I am an archaeologist and an intercultural communicator by trade, but life has taken me many places, so I have also been a translator, a researcher, a chef, a farmer, a waiter, and a myriad of other things we will be able to laugh about when we get to meet! I speak Portuguese, English, and Spanish fluently, while my Finnish, my German, and my French aren't too shabby either. I am always up for a language exchange though, so feel free to put me to the test and share whatever knowledge you feel like imparting! I love to travel, to bike, to play my (classical) guitar, to cook (please share all the vegan recipes you can!), photography, animals, hiking, climbing, and effectively all things nature and outdoors! I am also fascinated by history, geography, maps (archaeologist and nerd alert!), and interculturality at large and in particular human and natural adaptations to local conditions.

Academically, I studied archaeology in Porto (PT) and in Barcelona (ESP), and Interculturality and Political Sciences in Latin American Indigenous contexts in Helsinki (FI) and in Salamanca (ESP). My interests focus on Indigenous Peoples and postcolonial discourses. I am currently doing a Master's Degree in Underwater Archaeology at the University of Cádiz, in southern Spain. Professionally, I have worked in recent years with NGOs in Brazil, both in the Amazon and in the Cerrado, on Indigenous Peoples protection and land demarcation, as well as environmental protection, and most recently with IOM in Guatemala, as a researcher on irregular migration from the Western Highlands to the United States, Mexico, and Canada. I have in the past worked mostly with environmental issues, which led me back to my native Portugal to run a permaculture farm alongside an ecotourism project, for a year. I have also worked extensively as a scientific translator and live interpreter for NGOs, particularly in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, mostly on environmentally- and Indigenous Peoples-focused topics. I have been fortunate enough to have lived in Portugal, Spain, Finland, the Netherlands, Brazil, Bolivia, and Guatemala for the last 10 years.

... means of travelling?! Why, hitchhiking, of course! One gets to move relatively fast while still getting to know local people, sharing stories and funny tales, sometimes leading to the most amazing places, moments, and unforgettable memories.
Travelling has become a way of living for me. It represents the endless possibilities of personal growth, expanding knowledge and perspectives, getting to know other persons, peoples, their cultures, and their understanding of the world they inhabit. I love to be surprised, to meet people where they are, to be stunned by nature and by what fascinating adaptions humans come up with when faced with particular contexts, be they political, economic, or natural. Travelling also allows me to get to know myself and to reflect on my own standing in the world, to push boundaries and see what one can find on the other side! Above all, travelling allows me to make new friends and meet new, different, amazing people whose stories bring so much joy to life!
