About me

People are what makes a culture. I love talking with locals to learn where they eat and where they go in their hometowns. It's no surprise that many of the most authentic places to eat are not on the main roads, and some of the most extraordinary places to visit are not often featured on tourist maps. This was driven home when my family and I lived in Japan for three years. As a passionate traveler, I also write about the locations and people I meet. I’ve had features published in several print and online newspapers, magazines and journals, including my previous hometown newspaper, the Riverside Press-Enterprise. You can read a small selection of my features from my website: www.carolynburnsbass.com. Though I am Christian, I have strong beliefs in diversity, inclusivity, and equity, and cherish my friendships with people of different religions, races, and sexual/gender identification.

I've mostly worked from home (even before COVID), which has allowed me to carve time for travel around my work as a writer and media arts specialist. I've visited four continents and lived on two. My husband and I raised two great kids who were both born in Japan. Through the years we've taken many family trips that have given our children a sense of world citizenship. Born in Los Angeles, I lived most of my life in California. We moved across the country in 2010 to settle in the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina.
I am planning several big trips for 2023: California, San Antonio, TX (attending US Travel Association's IPW), and Scotland. In between traveling, I continue to write for several media outlets, as well as my own blog and creative writing.
Big city: Paris Tropical Destination: Riviera Maya, Mexico Restaurant: Irori Sanzoku, Iwakuni, Japan Hotel: The Betsy, Miami, South Beach, FL Airline: American Historic: All over Italy Beach: Laguna Beach, CA Mountains: Appalachian Range, USA Lake: Lake Tahoe, CA & NV, USA
Travel opens the eyes of the heart. When a person visits a unfamiliar place, they must make adjustments to their expectations and assumptions, often leading to acceptance of cultures and lifestyles they might ordinarily have dismissed. Breathing the air and seeing the vistas of places only read about or seen in photographs and films intoxicates my spirit and affirms my place in the global community.
