The Ultimate Group Travel Destinations in Germany

Why go far when the good is so close?

Germany is not just Germany – it depends on the perspective. The best example of this for me was Hamburg, but more on that later. The country has more to offer than Oktoberfest – yes Oktoberfest is a highlight in itself, no question – but have you ever let the sun shine on your face at the North Sea? Go island hopping at the Baltic Sea? Tasted wine in the city of Weingarten? Or have you ever felt like a princess or prince at Neuschwanstein Castle? Get inspired and plan your next group trip with JoinMyTrip to the best spots in Germany!

1.  Hamburg

Hamburg

I’ve been to Hamburg twice so far. The first time I thought – wait a minute, this is the city everyone is so excited about?! Gray, bad weather, the supermarkets super far apart. The sea is full of cranes, freighters and containers. Not a very romantic sight. Or is it? It all depends. When I came to the city for the second time a few years later, I got a lot of things right. I knew people who lived there – and saw a completely different Hamburg than the first time. Meanwhile I like Hamburg very much. So let me give you some tips for your next group trip with JoinMyTrip

What to see in Hamburg:

  • Nightlife: The Reeperbahn in St. Pauli stretches almost a mile full of bars, discos and clubs, theaters and burlesque shows. The Reeperbahn is legendary and known far beyond the country’s borders.
  • Altona fish market: The most popular weekly market in the Hanseatic city looks back on over 300 years of history – and attracts 70,000 visitors every Sunday between 5:00 and 09:30, including many tourists. A short anecdote how to combine nightlife and visiting the fish market: a friend visited voleé directly after partying in St. Pauli which is nearby the fish market – and bought a chicken without further ado – possibly not quite thought out. This chicken went home by subway (I assume it went  without a ticket) and the next day it consumed ice cream for breakfast. Thankfully, the chicken met a better fate and found a new home on a farm nearby.
  • Boat tour: There are many ways to explore the city by the water – including a boat tour. There are great harbour tours during the day, evening light cruises, trips through the Speicherstadt and even trips with culinary highlights such as wine and cheese.
  • If you like to see musicals and/or are a Disney fan, you are also in good hands in Hamburg: from “The Lion King” (one of the best musicals I have ever seen!) to “The Ice Queen” and “Tarzan”, every child’s dream of experiencing their favorite characters live is fulfilled here.

These Hamburg highlights are made for a group trip: strolling through the fish market together in the morning, a boat trip through the city in the afternoon, a musical in the evening and then partying on the Reeperbahn. 2. Neuschwanstein, Bayern

neuschwanstein castle

Neuschwanstein is the most famous of Ludwig II’s castles and one of the most famous sights in Germany. It is visited by around 1.5 million tourists every year. The structure was built as an idealised image of a knight’s castle – and actually looks like a picture-book princess castle. It is not without reason that it is the most frequently used depiction of such a castle in American advertisements. In the surrounding area, castle park and Königsalpe, there are also many hiking trails that are a popular destination for group hikes. In the castle park alone, there are three hiking routes that are characterised by different landscapes and extend for many kilometers:

  • the Royal Alps Route is a length of 121 kilometers
  • the box seat route is 124 kilometers.
  • and the Idyllic Garden Route is 96 kilometers.

3. Sylt

Sylt

Dunes, villages and fresh North Sea air – sounds perfect to relax! You can do this, for example, on the 40km long West Beach on Sylt, which stretches from Ellenbogen in the north to Hörnum in the south. With only 100m2, the North Frisian island is not the best in terms of size, but it has so much more to offer what the holiday-minded heart desires: mudflats and salt marshes, dunes and endless beaches, dreamy corners to slow down and lively places. Here are a few tips for those who are ready for the island.

  • Do you want to explore the island incognito and live like a local? Then a bright yellow rain jacket, called Friesennerz, is a must. The greeting “Moin”, flies from person to person at any time of day or night.
  • Relaxed enough and in the mood for something new again? Then let yourself drift along the shopping mile of Westerland, Sylt’s capital, which combines modernity and tradition. Whether you want to take an afternoon break in a cozy café or visit one of the first-class restaurants, there is something for everyone here.
  • Arrival: The island is easily accessible and the choice of transportation is great: whether by car, ferry, plane or train, you will always reach your destination.
  • There are also some activities for the sporty among you: walking, playing volleyball, surfing and cycling are popular pastimes here.
  • Wadden Sea: There are three types of mudflats that determine the mudflat walks: Mudflats, mixed mudflats and sandflats. There are mudflat walks for example in Kampen, Hörnum, Morsum and Keitum. The best time of year for this is in summer and barefoot – so you can experience the Wadden Sea by truly sensing nature. Or do you want to walk on the seabed between two islands? Then take the boat from Hörnum to Amrum or Föhr, where mudflat walks to the other island start!

With so many different sights and excursion options, there’s sure to be something for everyone – grab your friends now and create your trip on JoinMyTrip and relax on the island!

4. Bodensee

Bodensee

Lake Constance borders three countries: Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It is the largest lake in Germany and characterises the foothills of the Alps with its idyllic lakeside promenades and lively cultural cities. There is a lot to experience here: sailing, windsurfing and swimming which are popular sports at Lake Constance. The Lake Constance bike path, which leads once around the lake on about 260km, is also an attraction. If you prefer to relax, you’ll be happy to hear that wellness is also a priority here. Not convinced yet? Then here are a few particularly beautiful destinations in the Lake Constance region that you can visit as a group.

  • Schloss Salem
  • Mainau Island
  • Rhine Falls (ok, that’s a bit of a cheat, because the Rhine Falls are actually already in Switzerland – but it’s not far, I promise!).  The Rhine Falls is the largest waterfall in Europe and therefore a very special sight. 373 cubic meters of water flow here per second into the lake. You can watch the spectacle from the shore or from a boat.
  • Hot-air balloon ride: Taking a balloon ride over Lake Constance is a very special experience! Pack up your group, book a ride and you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Constance and its (semi-)islands. Afterwards you will be baptised as an airman and get your own airman name with certificate in your hand.
