As an Indonesian, I have found myself traveling more than five times to Bali and had an unforgettable hiking trip to Lombok. From those journeys, I discovered that Bali and Lombok are like really close siblings who have different personalities. Bali is restlessly energetic, culturally-vibrant, and expressive. On the other hand, Lombok is raw, rugged, and deeply serene. We will compare Bali and Lombok based on six different categories – all backed by a local.

Going Around
Bali’s well-developed infrastructure and highly populated areas make it very easy to go around. Roads are smooth and easy to navigate, connecting tourism hotspots such as Kuta, Uluwatu, and Ubud. Then, one thing I love about Bali is that it has an overwater highway that takes you from the airport to Canggu for under 30 minutes. Moreover, ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek work like magic, in which you can order a bike taxi that picks you up in five minutes (and the drivers wear those famous green jackets!). In a nutshell, Bali is very easy to get around.
Meanwhile, traveling around Lombok is more of a challenge. One thing I remember about Lombok is that the island is huge and everything is spread out. You would need to book a private car to comfortably do a full-day trip. Although Grab and Gojek operate nation-wide, finding a driver in Lombok is harder compared to Bali. The numbers of drivers are limited and only available in tourist areas such as Senggigi. However, Lombok’s roads feel safer, less-congested, and wider compared to Bali. As long as you book a private car, going around won’t be a trouble!
People and Safety
The most immediate difference you will feel between these two islands are their cultures, depicted in architecture and the communities. Bali is Indonesia’s biggest Hindu province and the locals embrace their religion in their everyday life. You can find temples – big or small – all around the island. Moreover, small offering baskets called canangsari, sitting your hotel’s front desk or lying in front of a brunch cafe, serve as your daily reminder that you are in Bali. Meanwhile, like other parts of Indonesia, Lombok is predominantly Muslim. It has the nickname “The Island of Thousand Mosques”, representing the breath of Muslim culture on the island.
When we talk about hospitality, Bali and Lombok equally win. People in both islands are super friendly, flashing you smiles and even inviting you to their relatives’ wedding party. Then, politeness is a major part of Indonesian culture. So, the locals are familiar with sending gentle gestures and choosing kind words to talk to you. It is always appreciated if you learn about their culture and respect local customs, such as not stepping on the offerings in Bali and wearing modest clothing when you are invited to a Lombok family house.
Lastly, about safety. both destinations are incredibly safe for international and domestic tourists. Violent crime is rare, but some threats include natural occurrences and traffic safety. But here is my take as a local woman – I felt a lot safer in Bali. I had a few uncomfortable experiences of being catcalled while exploring Lombok, which I rarely, if ever, experienced in its sister island. Bali’s long history with high-volume tourism has created a highly normalized environment for solo and diverse travelers. However, my experience does not dim Lombok’s light as a friendly and safe destination. The resorts, famous beaches, and Mount Rinjani hiking trails are comfortable for women.
Nature
So we are talking about the nature? I have to say, both . But if you are a true outdoor fan who always seeks a mountain to climb everywhere you go, Lombok is for you. I used to love hiking and have tried several trails around Southeast Asia, but Mount Rinjani was the one that left me completely stun. The color clash Beaches
Both Bali and Lombok have gained their fame as beach destinations, but they are rather different.
Surfing

Cost
The assumption that “less developed equals cheaper” isn’t entirely accurate when comparing these two islands. The reality of budgeting here comes down to a trade-off between local commodities and tourist infrastructure.
Food and Drink
Lombok is considerably cheaper. Local warungs (small restaurants) serving authentic Sasak food like Ayam Taliwang or classic Indonesian dishes will cost you a fraction of what you’d pay in Bali. Even in tourist hubs like Kuta Lombok, dining out won’t stretch your wallet.
Accommodation and Transport
This is where Bali flips the script. Because Bali has an incredibly dense and competitive hospitality market, accommodation in Bali is actually more reasonable and higher quality for the price. You can easily find beautiful, immaculately clean, and highly aesthetic guesthouses (homestays) priced at under €15 a night. In Lombok, the budget options can be a bit more rustic for that same price point.
Furthermore, transport logistics lean heavily in Bali’s favor:
- Scooter Rentals: Plentiful and highly affordable on both islands.
- Ride-Hailing Apps: In Bali, you can drastically save on transportation by renting your own bike for daily commutes and effortlessly switching to cars via Gojek or Grab for long distances or rainy days. In Lombok, these ride-hailing networks are heavily restricted by local transport cartels outside of Mataram and Senggigi, forcing you to rely on pricier private drivers.
Final Verdict – Bali or Lombok
Choosing between the two destinations will be heavily influenced by your preferences. Of course, they are excellent in their different ways and cater to different travel types.
