Venice in the winter: moody, foggy, gloomy, romantic. La Serenissima at its most serene. Everything you have heard about Venice is true. It truly is a magical, beautiful, one-of-a-kind city… AND it can be an overcrowded, inauthentic, touristy hell on earth. A trip of this kind—a coworking trip of one month—is the ONLY good way to experience Venice: 1) We will go during Venice’s off-season, so that crowds will be minimal and tourists almost gone, and 2) We will stay for an extended period of time in order to see what it’s like to actually live there! The best way to de-Disney-fy a place is to go grocery shopping. I already did this trip by myself, from mid-January to mid-February 2023, and it was incredible. People do actually live in Venice, and only by taking your time do you discover that they collect their garbage by boat, that grocery trucks are delivered by boat and crane, that old Italian men drink wine at ten am, that high schoolers spill out onto the canals to smoke cigarettes after class, that young mothers carry strollers up and down Venice's many bridges. Venice suffers from overtourism, but it DOES need tourism to survive, and this is how to do it: long-term and off-season! This is slow travel at its best. As novelist and noted Venice enthusiast Henry James once said, “The only way to care for Venice as she deserves it is to give her a chance to touch you often — to linger and remain and return.” The first two weeks of this trip will be utter calm. We'll enjoy the quiet off-season in order to get acquainted with the city and its various artistic and aesthetic treasures. In the third week, however, Carnival will begin! NOTE: Carnival in Venice is NOT like Rio or New Orleans! It's not really a street party scene. People dress up in masks and costumes and walk around the gorgeous city. There are private balls, but they are pricey. You can, however, admire the costumes for free. ;) I will be organizing is regular social activities such as happy hour / aperitivo, dinners, and other get-togethers, including walking tours of each of the neighborhoods listed as "stops"! You are also welcome to organize things amongst yourselves: this coworking trip is a way to ensure that you’ll have other people in the city with whom you can go to yoga class, go to gelato, go sightseeing, etc. — while making some lifelong digital nomad friends in the process!

My name is Maia! I’m a 32-year-old American whose father grew up in Venezuela and whose mother grew up in the Philippines, but I did my Master’s in Paris and will hopefully soon be a French citizen! I have been traveling full-time as a digital nomad for two years and decided to become a Trip Leader here because I love bringing people together and because I thought it would be nice to have some company. :) My interests include reading, writing, learning languages, and history. I’m an organized, logistics-oriented person who is also a natural mediator. I can’t wait to meet you!

Since this a trip of one month, everyone will have a private room. For this, we will use Airbnb. This means that we will not all be staying in the same place, since most apartments have just two or three bedrooms. Because of this, we will have regular socials, mixers, and events to ensure bonding between the multiple locations! Any questions about the trip? You can let me know in the Q&A section! I'm also happy to videochat to answer any and all questions -- just let me know!

Trip Itinerary
1

San Marco

Day 1
Venice's most touristic, but most iconic, neighborhood, with such sights as: - Piazza de San Marco - St. Mark's Basilica - Doge's Palace - The oldest cafe in the world!!! We will do a good deal of sightseeing here -- in winter, we will be able to avoid the crowds!
2

Cannaregio

Day 1
A quiet, residential neighborhood, featuring - the historic Jewish ghetto - many delicious bakeries and small wine bars! - Ca'd'Oro - Beautiful little streets and peaceful canals This lovely little neighborhood will be more for hanging out and getting drinks. We may even live here!
3

San Polo

Day 1
- Rialto Bridge - Rialto Market - Basilica dei Frari This will be a neighborhood that we will do a lot of sightseeing in! You may also wish to come here to go to the market and get your groceries. :)
4

Dorsoduro

Day 1-29
My favorite neighborhood!!! I will take you to my favorite little bars, my TWO favorite gelato places, and my absolute favorite museum: the Galleria dell'Accademia. Also featuring my absolute favorite bridge in Venice. This is the other neighborhood that we may be staying in!
5

Castello

Day 29
Enormous Castello has parks, incredible architecture, a wide shopping avenue, and tons of sandwich shops and eateries. We will often come here to get fresh produce from the grocery boat!! My favorite wine bar is also located in this area.
6

Santa Croce

Day 29
Don't be too shocked by the cars! ;) This part of the city is near the bridge to the mainland, and the only part of the city where cars are allowed. It is a bit gritty, like the train station neighborhoods of many cities, but there are still magnificent museums and churches to see!
7

Murano

Day 29
Historic Murano, an island near Venice, was the center of glassmaking in Europe for many years. Today, it is known for its colorful houses, much like its neighbor, Burano! There is also a wonderful Byzantine church here.
8

Burano

Day 29
Burano is another island near Venice that historically made lace. There is a lace museum here, as well as more colorful houses! Burano is also known for a particular kind of traditional cookie, the bussola. Legend has it that fishermen's wives would bake this hard cookie in order for their husbands to take with them when they went to sea.
9

Torcello

Day 29
Mysterious Torcello is another island further away from Venice. Although almost deserted today, it was actually one of the first parts of the island to ever be settled!! It is worth the trip for the eerie feeling this ghost town gives off -- not to mention an incredible cathedral built in the 600s (with Byzantine mosaics from the 11th and 12th centuries!).
