Trip Itinerary
1
Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver
Day 1-2
We'll start our journey in the heart of downtown Vancouver! In the morning, we'll begin our journey by introducing ourselves to each other and discussing the week's itinerary, learning goals and expectations. After settling in our rooms, we'll meet again for cocktails, wine, local cheese platters, and appetizers made by local Indigenous chefs with authentic recipes handed down to them from their grandmothers.
2
Stanley Park
Day 2-3
Today we'll take a walking tour through Vancouver to visit the world-famous Stanley Park, with its collection of totem poles and carvings representing several First Nations cultures of Coastal British Columbia nestled between the giant centuries-old Red Cedar and Douglas Fir trees. We will listen to a local Indigenous guide share with us ancient ecological practices for harvesting food, medicine and technology, contemporary history and Indigenous ways of living. Then we'll take a walk on the Seawall to Third Beach and Lost Lagoon, all under the gaze of Vancouver's iconic and picturesque skyline. We will end the day with a walk to the historic Sylvia Hotel for Happy Hour on English Bay. Travellers will then be free to choose their own adventure for the evening...may we suggest exploring Vancouver's West End. Maybe walk from Granville Street to Gastown or Denman and Davie Streets? Nearby Robson Street is also well known for high-end shopping (as is Alberni Street). Or just hang around at Sunset beach in front of the Sylvia to enjoy the evening.
3
Deep Cove
Day 3-4
Today we will be adventuring out on the water for a two-hour canoe trip up Indian Arm on the Burrard Inlet with an Indigenous guide from the Tsleil-Watuth Nation. Paddle with us on the Pacific Ocean in the protection of the Inlet and the Cascade Mountains. Hear stories and Legends thousands of years old while taking in the scenic natural beauty of the region. We will also take some time to check in with one another and discuss where we have been, and what we have seen and heard. In the afternoon, travellers are free to find their own adventure, or to join us on a microbrewery and pub crawl through our neighbourhood, Main Street in Mount Pleasant.
4
Pacific Spirit Regional Park
Day 4-5
Today we'll take a trip to Pacific Spirit Regional Park, located on Vancouver's west side and on the traditional and unseeded territory of the Musqueam. We'll explore the 750 hectares of forest while listening to an Indigenous Interpretive Guide share with us an authentic cultural experience rich with Indigenous stories and teachings. During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with local Indigenous people, discuss what you are learning, and ask questions. In the afternoon, we will explore the history of what is now called Point Grey in Vancouver through an Indigenous Art walking tour of the UBC campus led by one of your hosts and an Indigenous art scholar, Dr. Shannon Leddy.
5
Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre
Day 5-6
Today we will be getting out of town to head up to Whistler. While it is world-famous for its winter sport culture, it is also the home of the Lil’wat and Squamish First Nations, and steeped in thousands of years of history and culture. Join us on a guided tour of the Squamish and Lil’wat Cultural Centre in the morning before taking time to explore the many shops and cafés of the Upper Village. In the afternoon, we will enjoy some time with contemporary Indigenous arts on a guided tour at the Audain Art Museum before enjoying a Happy Hour at the Dubh Linn Gate Pub. We will have you back in Vancouver in good time, so you can still wander out for an evening of adventure in town, or turn in early for a good night’s sleep.
6
UBC Farm
Day 6-7
Today we will get up close and personal with the land by visiting the Indigenous Garden at UBC. Here we will meet with garden Elders and participate in a truly emotive indigenous ceremony. Then, after a quick clean-up stop back at the hotel, we will explore the many shops and eateries of the renowned public market at Granville Island. We’ll meet for a pint together before splashing out with on a meal to celebrate the end of our journey together in a good way.
