Guided trip
Northern lights | snowshoe hike | Cross country skiing through Finnish wilderness | Winter fishing Aurora Workshop | Slow travel | Local travel companion | Reduced group of 8 men | LGBT friendly 8-day Finland Winter Expedition Adventure Tour with a local Finnish travel companion, starting and finishing from Helsinki. The base of all our operations will be Rantasalmi, a small town in eastern Finland located in Saimaa National Park in the Finnish Lakeland area. We go hunting for the northern lights. We will have an expert guide in hunting auroras and for the ice fishing or nature sighting road trip as well. We will also live with the people belonging to the local culture, where we can have several teamwork sessions, learn the history of their area and get to know how locals live here daily. We will heat the sauna every day, learn how to smoke trout like Finnish guys, visit several local areas, and have a good relaxed time together. At our Perfect Environment we will share and stay in a comfortable, 10-person lakeside cottage equipped with all kinds of amenities (fully furnished kitchen, sauna, heating, etc.). We will go on excursions in the area: cross-country skiing, ice skating slopes and enjoying the spectacle of the possible northern lights, or aurora borealis. You don't need to be an expert, you will be guided for everything. Slow travel, gastronomy, snow and the Northern Lights await on this active tour of winter. My frosty Finland tour makes the most of winter: skiing, snowmobiling, dog-sledding, ice fishing, Finnish survival skills workshops, tasting and making local gastronomy and sleeping in an authentic cabin at Saimaa National Park to admire the northern lights. Together we’ll get to know Helsinki on an exclusive walking tour. And finally, we’ll veer back to Helsinki for one last night, and if you’ve never swum in Helsinki city center—in the middle of winter no less—you can even scratch that off your list. The accommodations, rental car, husky tour, overalls, snowshoes, food during the aurora hunting tour and experienced guides are included in the price. The only separate costs are gas and food for the days before and after the tour, but we will create a Splitwise account and share the costs between us. Ideas for cost in this tour: - FOOD: I estimate €15 per person/day shopping at the local supermarket. We will make breakfast, lunch and dinner in the cabin. What you consume on your own on the outings comes out of your own pocket. Alcoholic beverages are not included. - GASOLINE: rental of a bigger car is €650/week and gasoline €150 per car to be distributed - OTHER EXPENSES: Some shopping, food in Helsinki, going out to a restaurant, or having a drink. Please note that anything separate from eating at the destination is not included EXPENSES EXCLUDED: - FLIGHTS from your origin to the destination or meeting place. I will be leaving from Malaga, but if you want to join us in Helsinki from any other part of the world, no problem: I will try to help you find the most advantageous option. HARRI OF FINLAND: Who Accompanies You On This Journey? 8 days of travel accompanied by an expert in responsible tourism travel who has designed this trip "MOI!" I am Harri, a Finn living in Spain who is passionate about travel, animals and outdoor adventures to seldom-traveled places, and I am always trying to do it in a responsible and conscious way for both the planet and local communities. I admit that I have always liked to travel, discover remote places and have new experiences. And yet, a few years ago, I went back to my roots and returned to my origins via active travels. I had the opportunity to have a daily sauna with a subsequent dip in the lake, paddle with the blue of the sky melting into the water, stop at a laavu to pick a few blueberries and eat something on the grill… It was a very intimate moment of contact with nature –not a cloistered nature– but alive, where people unfold. This is how the Finns feel their land. If one thing defines me, it is a passion for animals. I am a lover of nature and I believe that we should protect it especially when we travel, generating the minimum possible impact so as not to exploit it but rather to conserve it. Hope we have a nice time in Finland!

Helsinki

Day 1
Day 1 – Arrival day in Helsinki, Finland and road trip to Linnansaari National Park. Hei kaikki—welcome to Helsinki! Our trip kicks off with a Group Meeting at 12:00, and we will drive to Saimaa (5 hours) by rental car/cars and settle in our private cottage. If you aren’t able to arrive in the morning, we recommend flying in a day early to settle in. Day one, let's drive from Helsinki to LakeLand Region: We will arrive at our cottage in the afternoon, having several necessary stops driving to the center of Finland, throw hundreds of lakes and tons of snow. Tonight’s traditional Finnish dinner at our shared cottage (or at a local restaurant). Of course, we will heat our own sauna and I will explain all the secrets of Finnish protocol for that.

Day 1-4
Days 2 and 3: At the Linnansaari National Park, cottage life and winter activities. Let's see around the area and will explain about the local life, options what to do and what to see. Perfect for beginners, the experience includes my private coach. - Traditional Finnish dinner at our shared cottage or at a local restaurant. Let's make it together, I will lead the group and give tips. - Aurora hunting excursion with your local guide. I will help us see these incredible things. Kuopio

Day 4
Day 4 – Let's visit Kuopio city: Today we will visit Kuopio. We are, quite simply, on the upper edge of the world here. During the day we’ll have a traditional fish soup lunch, stop by the local market hall, visit Puijo Tower and do some sightseeing in the city center while shopping for our dinner. (Optional: This afternoon we’ll visit a public sauna, where you can enjoy a dip in Kallavesi) Later driving back to Rantasalmi, and tonight we might stay in the cottage with dinner served and made by ourselves. Sauna and fireplace chill-out also at the planned program. KUOPIO: Founded in 1775, Kuopio is a thriving, modern city, where science and technology blends into the verdant natural beauty of the local environment. Surrounded by lake Kallavesi, much of Kuopio has been developed on islands. Indeed, one third of Kuopio is water and a half forest; the surrounding area is possesses great natural beauty, rich in flora and fauna, making it an ideal travel destination for nature lovers and those seeking quiet relaxation without being too far from a thriving urban center. Kuopio is also a hugely popular holiday destination for sports enthusiasts.

Rantasalmi

Day 4-5
Day 5 – Activities at the Linnansaari National park of Saimaa, Rantasalimi zone. Kick off the day with a Husky Safari! Finnish huskies are cheerful, strong dogs who love to pull the sled through snowy landscapes. Working with a partner, you’ll lead the dogs on a 5-kilometer/3-mile trek. After the safari, enjoy a warm snack and hot chocolate before the afternoon heats up with a traditional Finnish smoke sauna, an ice swim, and a dinner. Later this evening we’ll buddy-up and hop on snowshoes or just by walking (depends on the show situation) for a few-hour excursion in search of the Aurora Borealis, aka the northern lights. ABOUT RANTASALMI: Linnansaari National Park is the gem of Rantasalmi travel. Located in the middle of the Lake Haukivesi (part of Lake Saimaa), Linnansaari shows Finnish Lakeland at its best. Linnansaari National Park has vast open waters and hundreds of different sized islands, which makes it a boater’s paradise. In winter, Rantasalmi offers great opportunities for tour skating. Amongst the wintry island scenery, you will find several kilometers of maintained skating tracks that call to be explored. A pleasant winter’s day in Rantasalmi could include a skating trip in the clear wintry weather and a cup of something hot to top it off as you enjoy about our warm, cozy cabin.

Linnansaari National Park

Day 5-6
Day 5 – Oravi Fishing and Ice Skating day Today is devoted to the ice fishing safari and try ice skating. We’ll board a snowmobile again and seek out gorgeous local trout right on the lake area of Oravi. Our handsome local guide will help us spot birds, seals and conduct an ice fishing workshop for us. This evening we will try our own smoked trout or salmon. Tonight, we’ll enjoy one of the tour's most exciting experiences: snowshoeing in the wintry woods. If we’re lucky, the northern lights will shimmer above us as we doze off. ABOUT LINNANSAARI NATIONAL PARK: Linnansaari, in the heart of the Finnish Lake District, is an ideal place to spot rare lake seals and majestic ospreys. The waters of the park are dotted with lush green islands and rocky islets. At Linnansaari Croft, traditional slash-and-burn farming practices are preserved. The lakeland scenery is a delight all year round. A boat service takes trippers to the main island during the summer. Longer lake cruises set off from the nearby historic town of Savonlinna.
6

Heinola

Day 6
Day 6 – Driving back from Lakeland to Helsinki After checking out of our cottage, we’re off to Saimaa, the land of a thousand lakes and its capital of Savo. We will stop for lunch in Heinola, and maybe we’ll visit Lahti city to see ski jumping, if the weather and our timetable permits.
7

Helsinki

Day 6-7
Day 7: We’ll then drive to Helsinki. We will overnight at Airbnb, have a last night dinner together and have a city guided eventing tour. Next morning there are no special activities planned, so you are free to explore the city and depart at your leisure. Your guide Harri will help arrange your included departure transfer to the airport, if it's necessary. Safe journey!
