Armenia Roundtrip with Short Hiking Trips

Hey interested traveler, I plan to fly to Armenia in October and explore a bit of that country. Our trip will start in Yerevan and before the hikes begin, we visit the beautiful city of Echmiadzin. We start slowly with hikes of 4-8 km at the beginning. We walk over passes, through mountain villages and vineyards. In between we have delicious Armenian food: Stuffed vine leaves or gata, a typical pastry. We learn from local cooks how it is made. A highlight is definitely the hike to the 'Blue Pearl of Armenia', Lake Akna. Here we camp in order to climb the volcanic cone of Aschdahag the next day. You will be rewarded with a great view! Yerevan

Day 1-3
Today visit the capital of Armenia and see all the main sights of the capital, including Republic Square, Opera House, and Cascade. Visit Mother Armenia Monument, from where you will have a panoramic view of the city. Furthermore, you can visit Matenadaran. The next day free day in the city.

Gyumri

Day 3-5
On this day you will explore the area of Mount Aragats (4090), the highest mountain in Armenia. This mountain is an extinct volcano and is sometimes called a "sea of stones". It is also the largest mining site for tuff, a volcanic rock in various colors. Tuff is an important building material in Armenia. Visit the medieval fortress of Amberd, located at 2300 m on the slopes of Aragats Mountain. In the morning you will enjoy a city tour in Gyumri. Here you will visit the Sev Ghul fortress and the Kumayri district, where you can enjoy the atmosphere of the authentic 19th-century Armenian town with numerous traditional old houses. Free afternoon.

Haghpat

Day 5-7
In the morning, drive to the village of Sanahin. Today's hiking route runs between the villages of Sanahin and Haghbat - both with medieval monasteries listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Walking distance: 9 km. Walking time: 3- 4 hours. Overnight and dinner at a guesthouse in Haghpat. Today you have the opportunity to visit Akhtala Monastery, famous for its unique frescoes. Afterward, enjoy the day on your own in beautiful Lori and the surroundings of Lori. Dinner and overnight in a guesthouse in Haghpat.

Dilijan

Day 7-9
On this day you will drive to Lake Parz, the starting point of the hike, which is located on the territory of the Dilijan Reserve. This part of Armenia is often called "Little Switzerland" because of its lush forests that adorn steep mountain slopes. The trail leads through the deep forest and ends in the village of Gosh, which boasts one of the most beautiful khachkars (cross-stones) in Armenia. Hiking distance: 8 km. Walking time: 3 hours. Return to Dilshan. Dinner and overnight in a guesthouse in Dilijan.

Sevan

Day 9-10
On this day you will drive to Lake Sevan. This huge lake, which is up to 5% of Armenia's surface area, is about 2,000 meters above sea level and is the second-highest freshwater lake in the world. Visit the monastery on the peninsula. Free afternoon. Overnight in a hotel at Sevan.

Hermon

Day 10-12
This morning, drive to Selim Pass and visit the Noratus Cross Cemetery. The journey is full of interesting sights and picturesque landscapes. The road follows the ancient trade route - Silk Road. One of its branches passed through the Selim Pass. We stop near a 13th-century caravanserai that served as a shelter for merchants. Today this is the best-preserved caravanserai in Armenia with views of the Vayots Dzor Mountains from an altitude of 2400m. Overnight in Hermon Cottages. This morning you will drive to the village of Artabuynk. You will hike up to the medieval fortress of Smbataberd, perched on a rock, and down to the village of Yeghegis. On the way back you will visit the Jewish cemetery from the Middle Ages. Walking distance: 7 km. Walking time: 3 hours. Overnight stay in Hermon Cottages.

Noravank Monastery

Day 12-14
The trip to this part of Armenia would not be complete without visiting Karahunj or Zorats Stones, which are observatories of prehistoric times. Drive to Noravank Monastery, located on the hill of the winding gorge. Noravank Monastery, truly a place of breathtaking natural beauty, offers great opportunities for photography. Visit Khor Virap Monastery, and enjoy the wondrous views of Mount Ararat. Today you can visit the Iranian Blue Mosque, the Sergei Parajanov Museum, or the Ararat Brandy Factory. Overnight in a hotel in Yerevan.

Vagharshapat

Day 14-15
In the morning you will drive to one of the oldest cities in Armenia - Echmiadzin, the religious centre of all Armenians. The area of Echmiadzin is a UNESCO site. On the way you will visit the archaeological site of Zvartnots Cathedral, which is a masterpiece of Armenian architecture and for some the symbol of Christianity! In the afternoon, visit the fruit market to enjoy Armenian dry and fresh fruits and vegetables, and the Vernisage - flea art market to find a nice souvenir to remind you of Armenia. Overnight in a hotel in Yerevan.

Geghard Monastery

Day 15-16
Today you will visit the Garni Temple - a unique monument from the Hellenistic period in Armenia, which is still preserved today. From here you will descend into the Garni Gorge, famous for its unique rock formations - gigantic basalt columns often referred to as the "symphony of stones". Visit the rock monastery of Geghard (13th century) - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hiking distance: 5 km; hiking time: 1.5-2 hrs. The return journey to Yerevan. Overnight stay in a hotel in Yerevan. The next day transfer to the airport.
