Simarasok International Volunteer Program: Live, Learn & Create Impact in West Sumatra Join me for a meaningful 14-day community immersion in Simarasok, West Sumatra, where you’ll have the opportunity to live alongside the local community, exchange skills, experience everyday village life and contribute to promoting this beautiful destination to a wider international audience. This program is designed for travellers who want to experience Indonesia beyond the usual tourist routes. Instead of simply visiting a village for a day, you’ll spend two weeks becoming part of the community and taking part in a range of activities connected to local culture, tourism, community development and digital promotion. You’ll have the chance to interact with local residents, learn about their traditions and daily life, and contribute your own skills and ideas to the project. A key part of the program is digital promotion and storytelling. Together, we’ll help document the culture, people, landscapes and experiences of Simarasok through photography, video, social media content and other creative materials. The goal is to help showcase the village and its community to international travellers while creating content that can support local tourism initiatives. The experience is not only about volunteering, it’s also about learning and cultural exchange. You’ll have opportunities to discover the surrounding landscapes, experience local traditions and food, meet community members and understand what everyday life is like in a rural part of West Sumatra. There will also be time to explore and enjoy the natural surroundings together with the other volunteers.

Hi, I'm Zahra, my experience in Indonesia's tourism industry has given me the opportunity to explore and design journeys across different parts of Indonesia. From the mountains of Sumatra to the islands of eastern Indonesia, from traditional villages to remote communities, I have learned that the most memorable travel experiences are rarely about how many places we visit.

STAY CLOSE TO THE COMMUNITY. SLEEP CLOSE TO NATURE. During the 14-day Simarasok International Volunteer Program, accommodation is an important part of the experience. Rather than staying in a conventional hotel, you’ll have the opportunity to experience village life through two different accommodation styles: a local homestay, where you can stay close to the community and experience everyday life, and village glamping, offering a comfortable way to enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings and sleep close to nature. Both accommodation options are located in or near the village, allowing you to stay connected to the local community while enjoying the beautiful landscapes and tranquil atmosphere of West Sumatra. ✨ This is a chance to stay close to the community, experience local life and contribute something meaningful while discovering a less-travelled side of Indonesia. Come ready to learn, share your skills, create together and leave Simarasok with new experiences, connections and a deeper understanding of West Sumatran culture. ❓If you’re curious about the volunteer experience or would simply like to know a little more about what your stay in Simarasok will be like, feel free to reach out to me anytime, I’d be happy to share more and help you feel prepared for the experience!
