We arrive through the international airport in Thimphu to meet our guide and driver. We will return here later but for now we must continue to Thimphu to officially start our trip in the capital and largest city.
2
2
Thimphu
Tag 1-3
Thimphu is the largest city in the country and the capital. For that reason it has the only stoplight in the whole country! We will be able to visit the town’s dzongs, Buddha Dordenma statue nearby and the Takin Preserve which has the country’s national animal, the takin.
3
3
Punakha
Tag 3-4
From Thimphu drive to Punakha where the Punakha Dzong awaits as well as the Chimi Lhakhang monastery which is the famous fertility temple that the divine madman set up. Some unique photo opportunities and souvenir opportunities here as the phallus is the symbol of fertility in the area.
4
4
Laya
Tag 4-5
A half drive and half trek to get to this remote mountain town in the north. This is the town the Layap ethnic group lives in. They are famous for selling cordyceps and their iconic bamboo cone hats.
5
5
Punakha
Tag 5-6
Returning to Punakha and perhaps time to visit anything we didn’t previously have time for. For most of this day we will stay in Laya and return here as the journey does take some time and effort. Possible Punakha Dzong and Chimi Lhakhang monastery visit.
6
6
Trongsa
Tag 6-7
Long drive to Trongsa but many stops along the way. Visit Wangdue Phodrang Dzong which was rebuilt after a fire but is quite extensive. Gangtey Monastery is iconic and well known for festivals. Finally arrive in Trongsa.
7
7
Trashigang
Tag 7-8
Trongsa Dzong Visit possible either in the evening before or this morning before continuing on to Trashigang which is the largest city in the east. It has its own Dzong which we may visit, time permitting.
8
8
Merak
Tag 8-9
This small town is famous for two things, being in Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary and being home to the semi nomadic Brokpa. Sakteng is famously the national park of the yeti and while that may be a bit fanciful, it does protect some beautiful scenery and the red panda.
9
9
Trashigang
Tag 9-10
Morning in Merak where we visit with the semi nomadic Brokpa. The Brokpa wear an iconic woolen hat in the shape of a spider to keep rainwater away from their faces. Drive back to Trashigang on the long road back to the west.
10
10
Bumthang Valley
Tag 10-12
Two nights in this valley where we will stay around Jakar. It is well known for several monuments including but not limited to Jakar Dzong, Tamzhing Monastery, and Wangduechhoeling Palace. Nice to stay somewhere for 2 night in a row after such a fast-paced trip!
11
11
Paro
Tag 12-14
If lucky we will flit back to Paro but if weather does not cooperate, we have a long drive back. In Paro we will cap off this trip with Paro Taktsang and Paro Dzong. Paro Taktsang is the postcard image for the whole country. Until next time!
