Old City Baku

Tag 1-2
Join me on a journey to discover the beauty and history of Baku and its surroundings. On the first day, we will explore the old city of Baku, also known as Icheri Sheher, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will visit the magnificent Maiden Tower, a 12th-century monument that is one of Azerbaijan’s most distinctive national emblems. We will also see the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a 15th-century royal complex that showcases the architectural and cultural heritage of the Shirvan dynasty. The entrance to these two landmarks, as well as the Baths and the House and Museum of Famous Artist Tahir Salahov, are included in the package with a combo ticket. Tahir Salahov is a renowned Azerbaijani painter, who donated his paintings, personal belongings, carpet collection and photo archive to the museum. We will also visit his workshop, which is located on the third floor of the museum. After admiring these ancient and modern artworks, we will have a delicious meal at a local restaurant, where we can taste the authentic Azerbaijani cuisine. We will also stroll around the narrow streets and alleys of the old city, where we can admire the traditional houses, mosques, caravanserais, and bathhouses. In the evening, we will visit the Baths, a 12th-century historical monument that was recently restored and opened as a museum. We will see how the lights transform the Baths into a romantic and magical place, where we can learn about the history and culture of the old city of Baku. After the old city, we will visit the Gubernators Garden, also known as the Philharmonic Garden, where we can relax and enjoy the nature. We will also see the Philharmonic Hall, which is the main concert hall in Baku. The hall is a stunning example of Baroque architecture, and it hosts various concerts and events on art, design, and culture. 🎨 The old city of Baku is a place where the past and the present meet, and where you can experience the rich and diverse culture of Azerbaijan.

Heydar Aliyev Centre

Tag 2-3
On the second day, we will visit the Heydar Aliyev Center, a stunning architectural masterpiece designed by the famous Zaha Hadid. The center is named after Heydar Aliyev, the national leader of Azerbaijan, and it hosts various exhibitions and events that showcase the best of local and global arts and culture. We will admire the beauty and innovation of the building, and see some of the current exhibitions, such as Modernism and Fashion, Contemporary Turkish Art, and Masterpieces of History. The center is known for its distinctive architecture and flowing, curved style that avoids sharp angles. The center’s design represents the harmony and diversity of Azerbaijani culture, as well as the connection between the past and the future. The center’s shape also resembles a wave, symbolizing the Caspian Sea and the dynamic spirit of Baku. After the center, we will have lunch at a nearby restaurant, and then we will head back to the city. We will go to the Highlands Park, where we can admire the panoramic view of the city and the Caspian Sea, as well as the Flame Towers, the tallest buildings in Azerbaijan. The Flame Towers are a trio of skyscrapers that resemble tongues of fire, and they are covered with LED screens that display various images, such as fire, the Azerbaijani flag, and more. We will watch the spectacular light show and enjoy the contrast and harmony of Baku. The second day is a perfect opportunity to experience the contrast and harmony of Baku, a city that combines the old and the new, the east and the west, and the natural and the cultural.

National Museum of History of Azerbaijan

On the third day, we will visit the National History Museum of Azerbaijan, which is the largest museum in the country and displays the history and culture of Azerbaijan from ancient times to the present day. The museum is located in the former mansion of Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, a famous oil magnate and philanthropist who built the mansion in the Italian Renaissance style. We will see the personal belongings and portraits of Taghiyev and his family, who were known for their charitable and educational activities. After the museum, we will stroll around Nizami Street, a large pedestrian and shopping street in downtown Baku, where we can admire the beautiful buildings from the oil boom era. We will also visit the Baku Boulevard, a promenade that runs parallel to the Caspian Sea, and enjoy the gardens, fountains, Mini-Venice, and the Baku Eye. We will also visit the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, which displays the largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets and rugs in the world, with over 10,000 items of various weaving techniques and materials from different periods. After lunch, we will take a cable car and go to the Highland Park, which offers a spectacular daytime view of the city skyline and the bay, as well as the Flame Towers. We will also visit the Chemberekend Park, which is a green oasis in the urban landscape. The third day is a perfect opportunity to discover the rich and diverse history, culture, and architecture of Baku and Azerbaijan.

Gobustan

Tag 4-5
On the fourth day, we will visit the Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases the ancient rock art and mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan. We will start with the Gobustan Museum of Petroglyphs, where we can learn about the history and culture of the people who lived in this area thousands of years ago. The museum displays more than 100,000 items found by archaeologists, including stone tools, pottery, jewelry, and bones. We will also see a replica of the gaval dash, a musical stone that produces a tambourine-like sound when struck. After the museum, we will head to the open-air site, where we can admire more than 6,000 rock engravings that depict scenes of hunting, fishing, dancing, and rituals. The rock art dates back to 40,000 years ago and reflects the changes in the environment and the lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants. We will also see some of the remains of caves, settlements, and burials that are scattered around the park. Next, we will explore the fascinating phenomenon of mud volcanoes, which are small cones of mud that erupt with gas and water. Azerbaijan has the most mud volcanoes in the world, and some of them are located in Gobustan. We will see how the mud bubbles and spits, creating a surreal landscape of grey and black. If we are lucky, we might even witness a spectacular eruption of fire and mud. The mud volcanoes are also believed to have medicinal properties, so you can try to apply some of the mud on your skin for a natural spa treatment. The Gobustan National Park is a place where you can experience the ancient and the modern, the natural and the cultural, and the mysterious and the marvelous aspects of Azerbaijan.

Ateshgah of Baku

Tag 5-6
On the fifth day, we will visit the Ateshgah of Baku, also known as the Fire Temple of Baku, a castle-like religious temple that was built on top of a natural gas vent that produces a continuous flame. The temple was used as a place of worship by Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs, who left inscriptions in Persian, Sanskrit, and Punjabi on the walls. We will learn about the history and culture of the different faiths that coexisted in this unique site and see the impressive spectacle of the eternal flame. 🔥 After the temple, we will visit the Gala historical center and open-air museum, which is located about 40 km from Baku. The museum is dedicated to the history and culture of the Absheron Peninsula, and it displays archaeological artifacts, constructions, and everyday items from the 3rd-2nd millennia BC and the medieval period. We will also see the rock paintings, the fortress, and the workshops of the ancient settlement of Gala, which is now an amazing open-air museum. The fifth day is a perfect opportunity to discover the ancient and exotic, the spiritual and the scientific, and the diversity and the harmony of Azerbaijan.

Yanar Dag

Tag 6-7
On the last day, we will visit the National Art Museum of Azerbaijan, which is the largest art museum in the country and displays an impressive collection of over 18,000 pieces of art with local, Eastern, Russian, and European origins. We will see paintings, sculptures, carpets, ceramics, and more, and learn about the history and culture of Azerbaijani art. After lunch, we will visit Yanar Dag, also known as the “burning mountain”, a natural gas fire that blazes continuously on a hillside near Baku. Yanar Dag is one of the few places in the world where you can witness the amazing phenomenon of eternal flames, which are fueled by gas leaking from the underground. We will see how the flames dance and flicker across a 10-meter stretch of the slope, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding landscape. We will also learn about the history and culture of Azerbaijan, which is known as the “land of fire” because of its rich natural gas reserves and its ancient fire-worshipping traditions. Yanar Dag is a place where you can experience the power and beauty of nature, and the mystery and wonder of fire.
