Über mich

I’m Henrique Maia — zoologist, expedition leader, and wildlife photographer. I founded MaiaWildlife with a simple purpose: to take people into the heart of Africa and other extraordinary destinations, and show them wildlife as it truly is — up close, unhurried, and with real understanding. I personally lead every expedition, always in small groups, because I believe the best way to experience nature is without crowds and without rushing. My background in zoology means we don’t just watch animals — we understand them: their behaviour, their role in the ecosystem, and the challenges they face. What sets these trips apart is the access to real conservation work in the field. At Dinokeng in South Africa, we’ve witnessed genuine operations up close — lion collaring, elephant collar adjustments, snare removal from buffalo, and cheetah relocation. These are moments very few travellers ever get to experience. I lead photographic expeditions across South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania, Uganda, India, and Brazil. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or simply in love with the natural world, you’ll come home with images — and stories — that last a lifetime. Ready for the adventure?

For over 30 years, my life revolved around horses — I worked as a dressage trainer, and that world taught me patience, discipline, and how to truly read an animal. It was a long and rewarding chapter, but somewhere along the way my passion for wildlife and photography grew into something I couldn’t ignore. In 2023, I made the leap and turned it into my full-time path. I’m originally from Portugal, have been based in Switzerland since 2002, and have been travelling to Africa regularly since 2015 — each trip pulling me deeper in. Eventually I founded MaiaWildlife, combining my background in zoology with expedition leadership and photography. So in a way, I’ve spent my whole life working closely with animals. The setting just changed — from the arena to the African bush.
Right now I’m fully focused on MaiaWildlife — leading small-group photographic safaris and building the company into something that blends real adventure with genuine conservation. At the moment I’m preparing for some expeditions still this year, sorting through everything from camera kit to logistics. Between trips, I’m out in the field as much as I can be, photographing wildlife and documenting the conservation work we get to be part of in places like Dinokeng Reserve in South Africa. When I’m not travelling, you’ll find me planning the next expedition, working on my photography, and sharing the stories behind it all. I often travel alongside my partner Virginia, who captures much of our journey too.
My favourite place is South Africa — it’s become my second home. Something about it got under my skin from the very first visit, and I’ve been returning ever since. But if I had to choose a single moment, it would be a sunset back in 2015. I was standing there, watching the light fall over the bush, and it hit me all at once — the vastness of it, the silence, the sheer privilege of being there. I actually ended up in tears. I wasn’t expecting it, but that was the moment I knew this was where I belonged. Everything I do now — MaiaWildlife, the expeditions, the photography — really started with that sunset.
I travel because on the wild is where I feel most alive. There’s nothing like being out in the bush at first light, not knowing what the day will bring — and then witnessing something that most people only ever see on a screen. But it’s more than the thrill. As a zoologist, I travel to understand these animals and the ecosystems they depend on, and to show others why they’re worth protecting. Every expedition is a chance to share that — to help people connect with nature in a way that stays with them long after they’ve gone home. And honestly, I travel to keep learning. No matter how many times I return to Africa, it always has something new to teach me.
