If you're a waterfall and nature enthusiast, prepare to be absolutely amazed by this place! The lush greenery 🌿, breathtaking landscape, welcoming locals, and natural hot springs perched on top of it all make it an absolutely perfect destination. But don't forget to pack your rain jacket because if the Azores are famous for anything, it's their constantly changing weather 🌈. However, that's precisely why you'll find the landscape draped in its vibrant green coat with waterfalls all year round! On top of that, the Azores are one of the largest whale sanctuaries! You will have the chance of see whales, dolphins and other marine life on a boats tour. 🐋 Our destination will be the largest island, São Miguel, which offers an endless array of attractions to keep you thoroughly engaged. You'll discover numerous hiking trails, breathtaking viewpoints, the last two tea factories of Europe, and soothing hot springs to unwind in after an adventurous day 💦!
About us! Kayo and I will be your Tour guides, helping hand and (of course) friends throughout the week! Kayo was raised in Portugal, making him invaluable in navigating any language barriers. Even though the Açorianos have a unique dialect, he'll certainly be more adept than us at communicating! Currently, we call another archipelago, the Canary Islands 🌴, our home, but we're eager to explore the lusher side of the Atlantic with you guys! Shared expenses like Fuel or food for groceries will be shared on an App called Splitwise.
Details about the accommodation: During the week, we'll stay in two different accommodations, primarily to optimize our travel time. For the initial three nights, we'll rest in the capital, Punta Delgado, conveniently located near the airport. Then, for the following nights, we'll be on the opposite side, nestled near a beautiful beach in a charming villa. Bedrooms will be shared with one to two other individuals, with a mix of double and single beds available. You can let me know if you have any questions in the Q&A section!

As it's our first day here, and some of you might be feeling a bit fatigued, we're offering options for your morning activities. Would you like to embark on a thrilling whale-watching 🐋 adventure? Or perhaps you'd prefer to catch up on some extra sleep and later take a leisurely stroll through the city? Please let us know your choice in advance so that we can make the necessary arrangements. The Azores' location is ideal for observing whales, dolphins, and other fascinating marine creatures. In the afternoon, we'll set out to explore the picturesque surroundings and nearby cities.

Sete Cidades

Today, we're in for one of the trip's coolest highlights! We'll be venturing into the renowned crater lakes of Sete Cidades, taking in the breathtaking scenery from multiple viewpoints and exploring the lush greenery with leisurely strolls. Don't forget to pack a picnic, so we can relish this absolutely stunning landscape together. Later on, we'll make our way down to the East Coast, where we'll embrace the vastness of the ocean. If our timing aligns well with the tide, we might even have the opportunity to take a dip in the pleasantly warm ocean water, thanks to the natural underwater heating! Our final destination, will be a super nice beach with a spectacular sunset! There are restaurants and bars nearby, so we won't go hungry. 😉

Today, we'll begin our morning with a leisurely stroll through the city, savoring a delicious breakfast. Afterward, we'll pack our bags in preparation for our move to our next accommodation. As we journey north, we'll traverse a National Park teeming with incredible plant life, lush vegetation, and a captivating waterfall 🌿💦. Nearby, there's another waterfall we can choose to hike to if the mood strikes us! Once we've checked in at our new destination, we can unwind for a while, and in the late afternoon, we'll drive around for a bit and stop at scenic viewpoints and beaches.

Furnas

Finally, it's time for Waterfalls and Hot Springs! Let's aim to wake up a bit early today so that we can maximize our day. Especially in the morning, we need to be mindful of our time because we have a lunch appointment in the Furnas Valley, and punctuality is key. We will go for an around 3 hours hike, rewarded with two waterfalls and unique "jungle-like" atmosphere. Afterwards, at the Furnas village, we'll be treated to the traditional "Cozido das Furnas," quite possibly Portugal's most unique dish. This hearty stew is slow-cooked underground using volcanic heat 🌋 and will be served around 12-1 pm. It's an exclusive culinary experience that you can only find in Furnas on São Miguel of the Azores islands. In the afternoon, we'll indulge in relaxation at the hot springs and soak in the local ambiance. We'll also make a trip up a hill on the edge of the calderas to admire the village from a bird's-eye perspective. Prepare for a truly breathtaking view that awaits us!

Since yesterday was quite an action-packed day, filled with various activities, we can take a more relaxed approach in the morning. Let's relish the beautiful beach 🏖️ right in front of our apartment for a while. There's also a lovely trail to a captivating waterfall nearby. You can join me if you're up for it, or simply indulge in some leisurely beach time. The choice is yours 🥰. In the afternoon, we'll finally make our way to the tea plantation. We'll amble through the lush fields, perhaps savor a cup of tea, and quite likely witness the fascinating drying and packing process of this delightful beverage! ☕️🫖.

There's one part of the island that we haven't explored yet—the Northeast! So, today, that's one of our destination! I know a great breakfast spot back in the Furnas Valley and some other pools we haven't had the chance to visit yet. That's how we'll kick-start our day. Afterward, we'll embark on our final hike of the week. Can you guess the reward? You got it—another mesmerizing waterfall! It might be the last one for the week, but I'm a waterfall enthusiast, and I could honestly admire different ones every day! As we make our way back home, we'll travel along the picturesque West Coast, making stops at various viewpoints to take in the grandeur of the towering cliffs and lush landscapes. 🗼 On our last evening, let's cap off our fantastic time together by visiting a trendy beach bar in Santa Barbara and celebrating our unforgettable adventure! 🌟🥂
