Athens
Tag 1
This is the start of the adventure! We will meet, grab a takeaway coffee, and hit the road! Traveling northwest, we will head out of Athens and stop at the Corinth Canal to see what makes the Peloponnese an island.
2
Corinth Canal
Tag 1
Before the Panama Canal, there was the Corinth Canal! This originally was the dream of the Roman emperor Nero, but wasn't completed till the late 19th century. It saved ships the long sail all around the Peloponnese on their way to and from Italy. 6.4 km long but only 25 meters wide, it was a marvel of engineering, but nowadays, it's just a photo stop as modern commercial boats have gotten too big to pass through.
3
Ancient Theatre at the Asclepieion of Epidaurus
Tag 1
Mid-morning we will stop at Epidaurus to see the site and marvel at the ancient theater. Amazingly well-preserved, due to it being covered by an earthquake, the theater is still in use today after thousands of years. Famous for its acoustics, you can stand in the middle of the stage and be heard all the way at the top! Built more than 2000 years ago, this theater could hold more than 14,000 people, making it one of the biggest in Ancient Greece.
4
Nafplion
Tag 1
After the visit to Epidaurus, we will make our way to Nafplio where we will spend our first overnight. We will have free time for lunch and exploring the town, before checking in to our accommodation. Built by the Venetians, the architecture is very different from Athens and is in fact modern Greece's first Capital city. The city is very picturesque, and I will happily walk you around and find something nice and tasty for lunch! Mid-afternoon, we will head to our second site of the day, the archeological site of Mycenae!
5
Archaeological site of Mycenae
Tag 1-2
The walls of Mycenae are described as being Cyclopean because the "Ancient" Greeks who found this bronze-age city in ruins believed that only the Cyclops were capable of building something so enormous! This is a city that pre-dates the Acropolis of Athens by about 1,500 years! The city of Agamemnon that Homer wrote about in the Iliad. Initially thought to be a mythological city, it was discovered by an amateur German archeologist and many of the sites were still full of gold! After Mycenae, we will head back to Nafplio to relax and enjoy the town at night. We will soak up the atmosphere and enjoy our first dinner together
6
Sparti
Tag 2
After a leisurely morning in Nafplio, with enough time to do some shopping, visit the castle of Palamidi overlooking the town, or just relaxing and watching the world go by in a nice café on the square, we will leave Nafplio and make our way to Monemvasia! We will stop in Sparta (yes, that Sparta!) for a break/lunch before continuing on to Monemvasia!
7
Monemvasia
Tag 2-3
We will arrive in the afternoon in Monemvasia, in time to enjoy the changing colors of the sunset. This is a Medieval Castle Town, exclusively carved on the slopes of a rock. This fantastic place was originally constructed in the Medieval Ages and has been continuously inhabited since then. This town was constructed to be invisible from the mainland to avoid enemy attacks. It can be seen only from the sea, and only a narrow pathway connects it to the mainland. This is how its name came out, meaning a single passage. We'll have the chance to have dinner in this spectacular place!
8
Athens
Tag 3
Free time in the morning to explore more of Monemvasia, including the opportunity to climb to the top of the rock and see the Acropolis of Monemvasia. We will then begin the trip back to Athens, arriving back in the city in the evening.
