Brahmaputra River

Tag 7
Day 4 - We walk towards the mighty Brahmaputra River to see the Endangered River Dolphin Sighting Spot (Seasonal) Dolphins are one of the oldest creatures in the world, along with some species of turtles, crocodiles and sharks. The Ganges river dolphin was officially discovered in 1801. Ganges river dolphins once lived in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. But the species is extinct from most of its early distribution ranges. The Ganges river dolphin can only live in freshwater and is essentially blind. They hunt by emitting ultrasonic sounds, which bounces off of fish and other prey, enabling them to “see” an image in their mind. They are frequently found alone or in small groups, and generally a mother and calf travel together. Calves are chocolate brown at birth and then have grey-brown smooth, hairless skin as adults. Females are larger than males and give birth once every two to three years to only one calf. We also embark on a River Cruise to calm ourselves amongst Mother Nature. We also take the Eco village tour the same day.

Umananda Island is the smallest inhabited river islet in the middle of river Brahmaputra, flowing through the city of Guwahati in Assam, a state in northeast India. Its name derives from Assamese Uma, another name for the Hindu goddess Parvati, the wife of Shiva; and ananda, which translates to "joy". According to a myth in Kalika Purana, Shiva burnt Kamadeva with his third eye on Umananda when he interrupted Shiva's deep meditation, hence the Island is also known as Bhasmachal. Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre

Tag 7
Under the aegis of Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, the entire hillock with the Deputy Commissioner’s bungalow perched on top, along with the surrounding grounds have been transformed into the Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Center, dedicated to the spirit and legacy of the majestic River Brahmaputra. The tree lined walkways leading to the pedestrian only campus, with an Art Garden, a 170 years old Heritage Bungalow, an open air Amphitheatre along with a modern glass façade building functioning as a Café, and the Riverside Garden with the open grass patches set amidst trees, with art installations, specially designed activity spaces and viewing decks overlooking the river, are landscaped in a way to refresh the senses. The legacy of this place as a focal point continues from the days of yore when this hillock and its surroundings along the river were called Itakhuli, and was the base camp of the most powerful BorPhukan of the Ahom Kingdom. It was this hillock from where the legendary Lachit BorPhukan surveyed the battle with the Mughal army, and despite him being unwell, led a charge with his men for the decisive attack against the Mughals. The bravery of his decisive attack, witnessed by the River Brahmaputra, changed the course of the battle and the Mughals were pushed back forever. As and when the campus expands in the future, a proposed memorial dedicated to the memory of Lachit BorPhukan will be located at the far side of the hillock, with a clear view of Saraighat.

The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) is one of the busiest tea trading facilities in the world. In fact, it has seen the largest volume of CTC tea auction in the world. Established on the 25th September 1970 as a result of the commitments of a few pioneers, the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has been nurtured and sustained through the joint efforts of the State Government and the four segments of tea trade - sellers, brokers, buyers and warehousemen. Assam tea worth over Rs 3,300 crore sold at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre in FY 2022-23. Three years ago, the tea lounge at the Guwahati Tea Auction Center (GTAC) – one of the busiest auction centers in the world – opened its doors to connoisseurs and the masses alike in a bid to promote tourism and popularize tea. Today, the lounge, popularly called the chai bar (chai means tea in India) is doing brisk business and attracting tourists and locals who throng the place, where some say “the best cup of Assam tea” is served.“ Guwahati Tea Auction Centre celebrates 200 years of Assam Tea. In December last year, 1 kg of tea from Assam sold at an auction for Rs 1,51,000. Called Golden Pearl from the Nahorchukbari estate in Assam's Dibrugarh area, the tea was bought by a Russian tea company.
