Sao Miguel is the biggest of the Azores islands and its resemblance to Hawaii is incredible, I have been to both and wow! Sao Miguel really amazed me, and having it explored with a local guide that has lived on the island for over 40 years really made a difference. Now, I am proposing this full itinerary I experienced to you - check below to learn all of it! WHAT IS INCLUDED: - 7 nights in guest house (shared accommodation, 2 people per bedroom) + breakfast every morning - car for entire duration of the trip (Paul and I will be driving) - airport transfer - typical dinner of Cozido de Furnas (stew) cooked inside the ground near natural volcanic hot springs - visit at tea plantation - visit at thermal volcanic hot springs - visit at pineapple plantation - cooking workshop (cheese and malasadas)
About me! ✋ My name is Serena. I am 28 years old, and I grew up in Italy, but I have lived in London for the past 5 years. I organize trips on JMT and have a London-based food blog. I speak English, Italian, Spanish and a bit of French and Russian. I like food, wine, yoga, travelling, photography and the mountains! I am an experienced traveler and this is my 8th trip organized through JoinMyTrip - very much looking forward to it.
Accommodation: We will be staying at Paul & his wife's bed and breakfast overlooking the ocean located on the North-Eastern side of the island. Shared bedrooms (2 people per bedroom) and shared bathroom. Shower towels and beach towels are provided. Breakfast is always included in the morning :) Natercia and Paul are wonderful hosts that will make you feel at home right away and always have a story ready for you! Achadinha
Tag 1-2
Arrival day at Ponta Delgada international airport! :) Paul and I will pick you up at the airport and drive you to the B&B in Alchadinha where you'll be able to settle in, take a shower and relax while the other trip mates arrive too. If you arrive early, we can start exploring the surrounding area, which is full of beautiful short and easy hikes leading up to waterfalls and blue lagoons to swim. At night, Natercia will hold for us a workshop for making cheese and malasadas (typical fried dough dusted in sugar and cinnamon)

Gorreana Tea Factory
Tag 2-3
STOP 1: After breakfast we will visit the only tea plantation in Europe, you will feel like you are in Vietnam. Imported a long time ago from Japan, thanks to Sao Miguel favorable climate the tea is thriving on these particular hills! Here you can enter inside the establishment and observe the process, the ladies sorting out the leaves and taste a cup of tea on the terrace overlooking the fields 🍃🍵 Next you can climb up the hills and explore the plantation and take plenty of photos and videos! I will help you taking the best shots :) STOP 2: Dolphin and Whale watching! We will drive to Ponta Delgada, get some lunch and then we will set on a boat that will take us see beautiful dolphins and sperm whales - there is the possibility to swim with dolphins too 🐬🐋 STOP 3: While we are in Ponta Delgada, we will quickly visit the famous pineapple plantation 🍍

Miradouro da Grota do Inferno
Tag 3-4
STOP 1: Big breakfast to fuel up as we will go on a hike (4.8 miles) to reach Miradouro Grota do Inferno, a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the lake and the mountains STOP 2: After we will visit 7 ciudades with its iconic little church and get some lunch. If not too windy we can visit the natural swimming pools at Ponta da Ferraria, or optionally we can do stand-up paddle in the lake in Sete Cidades or alternatively visit some volcanic hot springs on the way back home in Furnas.

Furnas
Tag 4-5
We will be visiting Furnas Hot Springs (naturally heated volcanic thermal baths) which is a must-do experience! Relaxation, natural beauty, geothermal wonders. Remember to bring your swimsuit, a towel and flip-flops.

Praia do Areal de Santa Bárbara

Praia do Areal de Santa Bárbara is a beautiful and popular beach located on the northern coast. This beach, with its soft golden sands and crystal-clear Atlantic waters, is a renowned spot for surfers and water sports enthusiasts.

Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo

STOP 1: After breakfast we will drive to Vila Franca where we will catch a small boat that will take us to Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo, a small untouched protected island 10 mins off the coast. This volcanic islet, formed by the crater of an ancient underwater volcano, offers a unique and unforgettable adventure for travelers seeking natural beauty and outdoor exploration. The star attraction of Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo is its crystal-clear, turquoise natural pool, known as the "Piscina Natural." The pool is sheltered within the volcanic crater and is connected to the ocean through a narrow channel. Visitors can swim, snorkel, and relax in this unique and safe environment.

STOP 1: Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões. This is a gorgeous area to walk around to see waterfalls, plants and flowers. STOP 2: Lunch at Miradouro da ponta do Sossego STOP 3: Horseback riding (optional activity): Imagine the gentle sway of your horse beneath you as you embark on a horseback riding session that offers not only a connection with these magnificent animals but also breathtaking views of the endless ocean stretching to the horizon. This is suitable for all, it was my first time when I did this and I had the most amazing time 😍 1-Hour Ride: For those short on time or looking for a quick but memorable experience, a 1-hour horseback ride along the coastal trails is available for just 35 euros. 2-Hour Ride: For a more immersive and leisurely experience, opt for the 2-hour ride, priced at 60 euros. This extended adventure allows you to explore deeper into the scenic trails, taking in even more of the mesmerizing ocean views. DINNER: We will have a beautiful dinner at home with Cozido, which we will retrieve together from the cooking volcanic hole after 6 hours.

Departure day! After breakfast Paul will drive you to the airport according to your departure time :) If you leave late in the afternoon, we can go for more local exploring and short hikes near the B&B.
