Equestrian Statue of Charles III

Day 3-4
Tour through the Barrio de las Letras Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Góngora, Calderón de la Barca… The Spanish Golden Age promoted literature in a very prolific way. We will know its history in this tour through the Barrio de las Letras in Madrid. Just a few blocks separated their dwellings. Just a few steps between the two. But they hated each other. To dead. Lope de Vega professed a deep enmity towards his neighbor. A certain Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. These two writers, geniuses of the Spanish Golden Age, lived in the Barrio de las Letras. We will begin to discover the history of this emblematic area in the center of Madrid by meeting at 11:30 a.m. in Puerta del Sol. We will first pass through the squares of Jacinto Benavente and del Ángel, where we will learn about the history of the popular comedy corrals of the Golden Age. Next, we will discover the Madrid vicissitudes of various authors of Romanticism, such as Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and José Zorrilla. We will continue along Calle de Huertas to fully enter the Barrio de las Letras. There is Cervantes Street (where the House of Lope de Vega is located) and Lope de Vega Street, where the Trinitarias Descalzas convent is located, where the remains of Miguel de Cervantes rest. The distribution of these streets is ironic, since Cervantes rivaled his neighbor Lope de Vega to the extreme. We will also learn about the enmity between Góngora and Quevedo, eternal antagonists. Then we will go to the Plaza de Santa Ana, where we will see the statues of Federico García Lorca and Calderón de la Barca, and we will contemplate the façade of the Spanish Theater. At 1:30 p.m. we will conclude this tour of the Madrid neighborhood of Las Letras in Plaza de Santa Ana.
